Which sports team (in particular, NFL team) do you support and why?

I say root for the Lions.

Fairweather fans are the most despicable, vile, contemptable creatures in all of the NFL universe. (Key word being NFL universe. Bud Selig is the most vile creature in the professional sports universe.)

I’m glad dantheman made mention of the Black & Blue Division, because the Lions are a part of one of the greatest divisions in professional sports. Wearing the jersey of a B & B Division team is a badge of honor. Since (most) everyone around you will be rooting for the Lions, and since they’ll receive the most local media coverage, you might as well don a Lions jersey on Sunday afternoons this fall. (I still wear my Spielman 54 jersey with the utmost respect and pride.)

The Lions also have a great annual tradition, that being the Thanksgiving Day game. Dallas may play on turkey day, too, but you can’t root for the Cowboys. It’s just so cliche.

And if nothing else, go and enjoy a game or two at the new Ford Field. It’ll be nice to have the Lions playing in Detroit and not in that godawful Silverdome.

Happy

Growing up in Steeler country did it for me. It also helped that as I became interested in football for the first time the Steelers were just going into their first winning season of the dynasty- one of my first Steeler memories is watching the Immaculate Reception vs. Oakland.

To be a true fan, though- once you pick a team you stay with that team, through thick and thin. No fair weather fandom allowed! That means for every Terry Bradshaw and (gasp) Kordell Stewart you have to suffer through Cliff Stoudt, Mark Malone, and Bubby Brister.

This is IMHO, though. Just enjoy the games!

Foxborough ain’t Boston.

Why? I live in Washington.

I root for the hawks and anyone that Drew Bledsoe plays for!

I was a hawk fan from the very beginning but it only reached its current level when my half brother got a job as a scout with the Seahawks a few years ago.

I think we are looking good this year, but we have one HELL of a tough conference. It is going to be tough playing the 49ers AND the Rams, but I think we have a good chance to clean up the rest of the schedule, and hopefully take two from those two. Wishful thinking…maybe.

As for Drew. Drew has been my idol ever since I saw him play college football. I REALLY like his situation in Buffalo. He wants to be there, team wants him there, FANS want him there, decent recieving corps…I think he will do well.

Fairweather Fans: God I hate them. We have the same problem with Washington State University football tickets. We spend so much money getting the tickets and hotels for the season, we go to the Rose Bowl in 98 and we can’t afford the airfare. We end up giving it to some guy who probably has only seen 3 games in his LIFE. I just know one day my hawks are going to start cleaning some NFC West house, and sure enough some bandwagoner is going to screw me out of the moment…

Note: I mean two TOTAL from the 49ers or Rams. If we swept both teams even I would have the big one…

I’ve been rooting for the Eagles now that they have Donovan McNabb (Cuse is in the house!), and because every year my dad promises to take us to the Super Bowl if the Eagles are in it. Too bad the last time they were was 11 months before I was born.

Rick, don’t be close-minded by limiting yourself to NFL teams. Living near Detroit there’s plenty of good college football for you to have fun with and get riled up about. Pick a side in the Michigan vs. Michigan State feud, or become hated by all of your neighbors and root for the Ohio State Buckeyes or the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

Oh man… you just HAD to bring that up!

Well, let’s just wait until Thanksgiving and see if my boys in maroon and gold can turn that around.

Dear God, pleeeeeeeease let it be so!

and how on earth can you be a divemaster in the DC area?.. unless you’re plunging into that COLD quarry in Haymarket!

I am a die hard Packers fan. The reasoning is very simple:

  1. I grew up in Wisconsin

  2. The Packers are community owned so you do not have to deal with a greedy owner who will move your team in the middle of the night.

  3. The are one of the oldest teams in the NFL with a long and storied tradition.

  4. Lambeau field is arguably the best place in the country to watch football.

  5. The fans are ravenous and very knowledgable about the game, plus they drink a lot and wear cheeseheads (not to mention hunter’s orange in the winter!)

  6. The Packers play OUTSIDE on REAL GRASS.

  7. They have Bret Favre.

I was born and still live relatively close to the Atlanta area. I have always been a Falcons fan, and let me tell you, boy, it ain’t been easy. Despite the franchise’s comparative lack of consistent success, I am proud of my team. I couldn’t even begin to think of becoming a “bandwagon fan” of whatever team is successful at the time.

Ask my wife

Another reason that it will be much fun to see the Redskins underachieve is that I absolutely detest Spurrier. I would love to see him fall flat on his face and send Snyder scurrying yet again.

I don’t know what I’ll do if the Redskins actually make the playoffs.

<quote>I live in Northwestern Ohio, a 5 hour drive from at least 9 different NFL teams (Vikings,Packers,Bears,Colts, Browns,Bengals,
Lions,Steelers,Eagles) and I don’t root for a single one of them!
</quote>

Ohio to Minnesota in five hours? Damn <b>TelcontarStorm</b>, How fast do you drive?

Ok, after reading all the posts so far, and having a think, it seems my options are as follows:

  1. Root for the Lions, cause that is where I live, even though they suck.

  2. Root for the Titans cause that is where my wife is from, not a bad option, they are kind of average at the moment, AFAIK. Also, I know something about some of their players and I have a Titans tee shirt I was given as a gift.

  3. Root for the Rams cause I like the way they play. This could be seen as jumping on the bandwagon though.

  4. Pick someone else.

I think I am prolly going to go with option #2 as my first team. I can root for the Rams too though and I will enjoy watching them play. I dunno much about the Titans before their move to TN, I did not keep that close an eye on things back then.

I’m still thinking about it though.

Rick

The Mighty Tampa Bay Buccaneers!!!
Why? Because I liked the orange color and I thought the pirate (Buccaneer Bruce) was cool. What can I say, I was like 13 or something and it was the 70’s. EVERYONE had bad taste back then!

Ah, the days of orange, Leroy Selmon, Ricky Bell, James Wilder, Batman Wood, Doug Williams…
