I don’t get it. Why are they doomed? All the logic still applies, it’s quite easy to dodge a blow from a sledgehammer, and an axe strikes pretty quickly. But I want to hear why you think the sledgehammer could compete, for the sake of sledgehammer advocates everywhere – it’s getting short shrift in this debate.
If I recall correctly, Jack Nicholson used an axe with great effectiveness in that wonderful documentary “The Shining.” Put Scatman Crothers down for the count, anyway.
Of course, he was in turn beaten by a skinny woman (Shelley Duvall) wielding a razor blade, so it was all for naught.

You can bludgeon with either a sledge hammer or the blunt end of an axe, but I’ve never seen a hammer that can cut. Well, unless it inflicts really nasty splinters from the wooden handle.
