In my experience, most people who claim they’re “speaking uncomfortable truths” or “saying what we’re all thinking” or “saying what everyone’s afraid to say”, aren’t. ---

[tangent] So, um, okay… when I was growing up in New Jersey, I was friends with a lot of Jewish kids (not Jewish myself) and naturally I picked up a fair bit of Yiddish vocabulary which I would use at home in what seemed to be reasonably contextual ways. The result? At one point, my (first-generation Taiwanese immigrant) mother was sharing a hospital room with a friendly Jewish grandmother type, and they somehow got around to talking about Yiddish. At which point, my mom cheerfully proclaimed that the only Yiddish words she knew were “putz” and “schmuck”. Her roommate was _horrified._ “Do you know what those words mean?!” “No, I don’t. My son says them a lot.” “They both mean _penis!_” “…I’m going to smack that boy.” I laughed so hard when she got home and told me that story. (She did smack me though, I’m sure.) [/tangent] ---
