Some people are under the impression white males are under attack.
I suppose, but we’ve had a good run. I, for one, welcome our new status as not-quite-so-privileged.
IMHO the only person of European descent of whom it is acceptable to display a statue in public is Barack Obama. Tear all the others down!
The great hero John Brown has at least two statues in Kansas and one in upstate New York. Let’s hope they aren’t taken down! (There is also a public statue of the great abolitionist in Akron, Ohio, but it is now hidden to protect it from right-wing vandals.)
Can you point to what crackpot wants to take down statues to Theodore Roosevelt and what the reasoning is? Is this Panama related *(at least a little reasonable) *or racial related *(insane clown logic at best as Teddy’s race record was pretty excellent for the times). *
That was my first thought as well. Good call.
When the other side does, I will. When I stop hearing every single day in every single place about white privilege, or which statue of which (Non-Confederate) will come down next, I’ll let it go. When I stop being the Left’s boogie man, I’ll let it go.
The only place I hear about it is on the SDMB and only by people complaining about it.
When I’m out and about in the real world, no one is talking about it or bashing us white guys.
But I’m on the left( more or less )AND a white guy. How is it the cognitive dissonance hasn’t killed me yet?
Former presidents make easy targets for this.
But of course, since he was a “self hating” white man who has dedicated all of his life to doing all that he could to improve this country without a single thought towards discrimination or hate, he’s probably not to your liking at all.
Look, I’d be up for taking down ALL statues, destroying all monuments, and leveling all public buildings, if it would just make the so-called conservatives stop whining about precious and beloved statues that they’d never heard of before being taken down.
How about you ignore the loonies feeding you that bullshit? Maybe get some friends out in the real word?
If that is all you are hearing then you need to widen your reading. Stop searching out fringe articles that you know will frighten you.
In 1976, presidential candidate Jimmy Carter defended ethnic enclaves formed by free association and pledged not to use federal power to reengineer them: “I am not going to use the Federal Government’s authority deliberately to circumvent the natural inclination of people to live in ethnically homogeneous neighborhoods. I think it is good to maintain the homogeneity of neighborhoods if they’ve been established that way.”
To define these communities Carter used the phrase “ethnic purity”: “I have nothing against a community that’s made up of people who are Polish or Czechoslovakian or French-Canadian, or black, who are trying to maintain the ethnic purity of their neighborhoods. This is a natural inclination on the part of the people.”
What Carter said of neighborhoods is what Americans who oppose mass immigration say about their country: “This is a natural inclination on the part of the people.”
Carter on the ERA, 1980:
“The main obstacle to the ratification of the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment establishing gender equality) in Illinois and in Georgia and in the other States that have not yet made this decision is the allegation that it is only supported by radical kinds of people. And the question of homosexuality and the question of abortion and religious beliefs and the sharing of restrooms and the destruction of families–these artificial arguments are put forward, and they can best be knocked down by a person who’s known to be sound and committed and balanced and patriotic, with a stable family and a good job. Those are the kinds of people who must speak out. And the religious leaders in Illinois, and the mothers in Illinois, and the labor leaders in Illinois, and the business leaders in Illinois and in all those States are the ones that can knock down these false allegations that influence adversely some of the members of the State legislatures in the nonratified States.”
"PROVIDENCE R.I., May 25, 1976—Jimmy Carter told a news conference here that if he were President he would not ask the Attorney General to seek a Supreme Court review of busing to achieve school integration, as President Ford has done.
Other remarks today by the former Governor seemed to illustrate his persistent pro’slem in dealing with charges that he is not wholly consistent.
He told a questioner that he believed private schools should he required to admit blacks. Earlier in the spring in Connecticut he had said he could not understand why Federal courts wanted to require “every single school” to admit every applicant on the ground of religion or race. He later adopted his present stance when in Cincinnati early in May, he said that except for A few “narrow purpose schools” such as Jewish yeshivas, all private schools should be required to have an open admissions policy whether or not the school receives Federal, funds or had tax-free status."
How about Einstein? Unless you consider Ashkenazi Jewish people to be non-white.
Are you aware of any serious objection to any existing or proposed statue to Jimmy Carter? Or are you just desperately trying to prove a ridiculous point here?
BTW, another inoffensive, widely liked white guy; Fred Rogers, the host of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. No idea if anyone ever put up a statue of him, but I would certainly not object to one.
I just hate the popular view of Jimmy Carter as “Mr. Nice Guy.”
Well, every Ashkenazi Jewish friend I have say they consider themselves non-white. What they consider themselves is good enough for me.
