> The general view, among \*knowledgeable \*historians anyway, is that the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki saved more lives than they cost, by ending the war. That’s what the Allied decisionmakers at the time thought too. Following the general view, those people were all _heroes_.

Probably true. At the time, the Japanese government was drilling the general population as a militia for a last-ditch defense of the home islands from an expected Allied invasion, and since there were not enough rifles to go around, they were drilling with spears.\* Imagine how **that** would have played out!

This question is meaningless in the context of this thread; the OP asked who were the worst Americans and Hussein was introduced into the thread. Hussein is not an American and never was; had he been dictator of America, your question might have some relevance; otherwise it doesn’t. It is my privilege to assert that Bush is worse than Hussein and whose rule I would prefer doesn’t enter into it. Bush has done far more damage to Iraq than Hussein ever did. If you want a cite, go back and read the leading newspapers for the past eight years.

FWIW, I don’t think there can be any question that the Average German on the Street deserves credit for a great deal more responsibility for the Nazi’s policies than we tend to give them when we too-charitably distinguish between “Nazi” and “German citizen.” The Nazis rose in a culture that made them possible, if not inevitable, and the connivance of the German people was one of the essential factors in making the Holocaust possible.

I disagree with the 600k number but I do agree with this: plenty of people have died because of the invasion, more than we’d ever want to see. I am not blind to that. What is silly is pretending that before the invasion things were better; I believe you are allowing your hatred for Bush to color your opinion of pre-war Iraq. Hussein was a brutal, evil dictator. Outside of his cadre of Sunni acolytes no one had a hope for a bright future. Despite all the mistakes that Bush has made (and they are legion) Iraqis have hope for a better future.

Yes, personal attacks are a resort when facts do not support what you are saying.

Why don’t you answer / attack the authors of the reports I mentioned?

What do you have to say about this report prepared by the US government in August 2008:

There are heightened concerns about the absorptive capacity of neighboring countries, whether they can provide adequately for the populations that have moved across borders, and the impact of refugee flows on stability in general. UNHCR estimates that the number of

Is it that the US government’s “partisanship and hatred for Bush” is getting in their way of seeing how rosy things are in Iraq? Does the Red Cross suffer of the same? All other NGOs?

Can you provide reliable cites which contradict that?

Amnesty International 2008 report on Iraq

>
> Thousands of civilians, including children, were killed or injured amid continuing sectarian and other violence. All sides involved in the fighting committed gross human rights violations, some of which amounted to war crimes and crimes against humanity. Many civilians died as a result of bomb attacks by groups opposed to the Iraqi government and the US-led Multinational Force (MNF), while others were victims of sectarian killings by Shi’a and Sunni armed groups. Hundreds of people were abducted, tortured and murdered, with their bodies left in the street or found by their families at morgues. The increasingly sectarian nature of the violence caused hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes, swelling the growing numbers of Iraqi refugees in Syria, Jordan and other states to 2 million and increasing the number of those internally displaced within Iraq to more than 2 million. This added to the growing humanitarian crisis. Iraqi security forces also committed gross human rights violations, including unlawful killings, rape and other torture, and arbitrary arrests and detentions. The MNF killed civilians and held more than 25,000 detainees without charge or trial, including some who had been held for several years. Civilians were also killed by guards employed by private military and security companies who had immunity against prosecution in Iraq until October. The death penalty was used extensively and 33 people were executed, some after grossly unfair trials.

And all thanks to George Bush!

Read the report and tell me things are better now in Iraq.

> Even if those figures are correct (and I would argue otherwise) you’d have to balance that with the number of Iraqis that would have died at the hands of Hussein’s regime.

Why and what for? I mean even IF we had indisputable casualty numbers (which we don’t for as you surely know the US “doesn’t do body counts”) what the hell would that prove? George W. Bush, slightly less murderous for Iraqis than Saddam in six years than the latter in twenty-five? Something to be real proud of, isn’t it?

But ok, fine, say I give you that one (and _I’d_ certainly argue otherwise simply because just about any sentient being would have rather lived in Iraq _pre-invasion_) and you pat yourself on the back and puff out your chest…but with just one rather small though important quibble: Saddam and his cohorts; positively lambs when it came to killing Americans. IOW, they did NOTHING to deserve Bush’s (and his ilk) wrath as they had zilch to do with anything they were “accused” of.

Gaadh…so freaking sick & tired of Apologists for mass murderers.

Here’s an article where you can “play” with any number of casualty figures: [**Iraq violence, in figures**](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/629/629/7036068.stm)

Tell you what, find me **one** that comes close to justifying the butchery you’ve perpetuated on the people of Iraq and we’ll take it from there.

Hmmm…on preview, I see that my chances are somewhere between slim and none as **sailor** has already provided more than enough salient cites for anyone to attempt to justify this atrocity at such a late time in the game – so to speak. For I know of no “game” that murders people wholesale such as war – and a fabricated one at that.

That said, my apologies **lissener** , if I’ve momentarily derailed your thread. It’s just that I couldn’t contain myself after reading **Deeg’s** first insulting post…and yes, that is exactly what it was, _insulting_. Perhaps it may have been tolerable and/or debatable three/our years ago. No more. Everyone here’s seen the cards face side up. So enough with the absurd – partisan or nationalistic, both are just as bad/wrong – excuses and/or lame apologies.

I quoted your own cite: _Saddam Hussein’s brutal regime left a legacy of displacement, as his regime forcibly displaced Iraqi Shiites and Kurds in order to control territory, terrorize the population, and fight insurrection. Some experts estimate as many as 1.5 million may have been displaced over the three decades of his regime._ The situation in Iraq is poor but torture, assassinations, and gassings are no longer the instruments of the government.

Most Iraqis certainly would.

You know it is a bad idea to bring up Saddam’s use of poison gas since he did it with American help and encouragement. The farce which was the trial of Saddam Hussein made absolutely sure that this topic was never brought up because it would have put America in a tricky situation.

Had I been a native born citizen of Iraq during Saddam’s reign, the answer would be yes, I would have preferred Saddam Husein to George W. Bush. However, I am not and have never been a native born citizen of Iraq so your (repeated) question is irrelevant and not at all apropos to the question. The OP asked 'who are the worst **AMERICANS**. Why can you not get that straight in your mind? Saddam Husein was NOT an American even though he was one of America’s favorite dictators at one time. I totally disagree. I think for the Kurds it’s an easy decision to stay with the current climate as I believe they’ve been relatively stable. I have a hard time believing that Shi’ites preferred the oppression of Hussein. We’ll have to agree to disagree unless you can offer a good cite.

Whether that’s true or not is outside the scope of Bush because he had nothing to do with it. Hussein gassed his citizens. Whether he had help or not does not alter the fact that he gassed them. (As a side I note I reject the allegation that the US had any major involvement in the gassing. Some of the chemicals came from the US but most did not.)

I’ve already responded. Twice. I’ve said multiple times that there are plenty of problems in Iraq. Living standards is (according to your report) is one of them. However your own cite mentions the “brutality” of Hussein.

What does being a natural born citizen have to do with it? You keep changing the topic. You did, however, answer the question.

Comparing Bush to Hussein is a valid question when determining how “bad” Bush is; context is required. Truman was responsible for (IIR) 55k deaths in Korea. FDR many more in WW II. Lincoln’s actions caused 100’s of thousands of Americans their lives. Without context they were all worse than Bush.

OK, so, Bush, according to you is slightly less bad than Saddam Hussein. I still think that he is one of the worst Americans ever. He started a criminal war, against the commitments made to the UN, which has cost America a lot of goodwill and support around the world. He has authorised torture and indefinite imprisonment in Guantanamo which has also cost America a lot of good will and support around the world. And he has facked up everything he has done. What he has done is both criminal and counterproductive. There is no doubt that he is one of the worst Americans ever.

Right. It appears we’ve established Bush is, debatably, slightly better than Saddam. Ho boy! How’s that for small apples?

Having said that, where are the rest of The Apologists that justified this clusterfuck to begin with? As in the ones that argued against all common sense that “you were fighting them over there so you wouldn’t have to fight them over here” so SH couldn’t use his WMDs Stateside? Fear mongering aside, my croc’ boots are a damn sight more dangerous – specially when I deliver a direct scrotum hit. Turns a tenor into a soprano quicker that anything they could do in Guantanamo.

Once again my apologies **lissener**. But this time at least I’ve given you the Number One Gimp on my list…

Point being, for those not too keen of recall, that AQ had dick-all to do with Saddam’s Iraq – in fact they were mortal political enemies.

AQ in Iraq now? Which group, tendency aside, that feels the urge, isn’t there that wasn’t before? Any and all that’s who. Iran’s especially grateful BTW.

Thus I hereby nominate George Herbert Bush as THE worst American in my lifetime. And looking back at LBJ, Nixon and teflon Reagan, The Patron Saint of All Conservatives, that’s high praise indeed. Or not.

Tip your flute of Cava to the man. For finding a bigger imbecile as a CIC of your formidable Armed Forces is certainly setting the bar way beyond normal human beings. Then again, it’s rather obvious most Americans do things differently. Or, simply put, don’t give a shit when it comes to FP or their effects on the rest of us.

As to the OP – a list on the fly only considering characters in my lifetime:

#2: Henry Kissinger. Might have had a huge dick judging from the women he dated. Which has absolutely zilch to do with the enormous amount of people he had killed.

#3: LBJ. Conniving SOB. Whatever good he did for CR, he screwed the pooch with his VA strategy.

#4: LHO even if not intentionally, he may have caused, or did, a complete turn about in American History.

#5: R. Nixon. If you don’t agree, something called Google might become your friend. Cold blooded killer as they come.

#6: J. Edgar Hoover – we can thank him for aiding and abetting America’s Curent Quasi-Police State

#7: Rush Limbaugh – likely the biggest source of partisan hatred in this nation.

#8: Dick Chaney. Darth Vader personified. What else needs to be said.

#9:Paul Wolfowitz: Aside his own, whose interest did he promote?

#10: Too many to choose from. This one’s a freebie. Though having nothing to do with my lifestyle, if it was left up to me, any number of homophobic, deranged and ignorant ‘celebrities’ would certainly fit here.
