Who DOESN'T Think Algebra is crap?

<sigh> Why are you people not paying attention to what I’m saying!!! It’s no use…

And how could you NOT like poetry?!?! I understand that math is quite useful every single day, and poetry isn’t a necessity, but really, it is. Writing in general helps get out agressions that we’ve stuffed down inside, voice our feelings to others, teach people, so important!!

(Clambers over Smeghead)
Ignore him. Hi, I’m cornflakes, the best agent in Hollywood!

Seriously, if you can’t manipulate numbers, you will probably throw an undetermined (to you) amount of your pay out the window. I’m not flaming. Back when I was on commission, I caught bosses skimming my paycheck by doing the algebra in my head, then auditing my records to check my guess. As an actress, won’t you essentially be getting a commission from your agent?

Like others have said, math teaches problem solving. Personally, I like algebra because you can find one simple, unarguably right solution (BTW, I also like writing. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be posting this.)

Yep, a friend who taught college algebra used to get this all the time from his students. The ironic thing is that most of his students were education majors. Guess what they’re going to have someone in every one of their classes say?

lolagranola, if it helps, I have sworn that the next presentation I give will be in iambic pentameter with a couplet at the end. I wonder if anyone will notice.

But why worry about poetry if you are going to be an actress? You just need to say the lines, you don’t need to understand them.

Do you have any proof that you will be an actress at fifty? Perhaps your college wants everyone who gets a degree from them to have a well rounded education, just in case.

Once again, I understand the basics of math and it’s importance. If you would please read my OTHER posts, then you would see that I’ve specified what I feel is irrelevant in College Algebra.

Pepperlandgirl, this isn’t the Pit, take it down a notch. Poetry is a passion for me, just as Math is a passion for other people, many of those who have posted today. Frankly, I could care less if you can’t understand poetry.

I understand why I have to take the class, I was simply ranting about how irrelevant what I’ve been learning is. Also, I only need to take on math class, and I’ve decided to take more complicated classes, like calculus, in the future.

Have you no passion in life? I hope to be an actress(theater, not TV or movies, I’ll die before I’ll act on television) until I die.
Besides that, I have already decided to minor in business in case I’m not successful as an actress.
Still questioning whether I’m well rounded?

Once again, I’m not some half-wit who can’t grasp the importance of a full education. Why do you feel the need to talk down to me? As a 16-year-old in college I already feel the need to prove my intelligence to everyone around me. Does nobody understand the fact that I’m a human being and what you say to me affects my life?

Feelyat…if you are bored with algebra because it’s too easy, maybe it’s not too late to transfer to a more advanced class.

If you look back at your OP, you did claim that algebra was useless. Now, I realize that you were exagerating, but you can’t get upset if people point out how silly that was.

If you are getting into analytical geometry…all those lines and graphs and such…maybe you’ll feel better if you know that it’s good practice for calculus. All calculus is is applied algebra, just like all algebra is is applied arithmetic.

I know that most people will never use more than 7th grade algebra. But we can’t just allow kids to stop taking math classes then because they’ve decided on other careers, that would trap them in non-technical fields for the rest of their lives. We desperately need all the scientists and engineers we can get (to all the scientists and engineers out there: thank you.). Anyway, you’ll be done with your class in only a few months. Oh wait, I forgot, a month is a long time at your age…

LMAO!
wipes tears from her eyes
Oh, thank you, thank you for the laugh. That’s great, are you going to be a comedian?
Honey, I haven’t even turned it on.
And it’s I couldn’t care less. “Could care less” implies that you do, in fact, care.

Oh, I don’t have time for this.

Feelyat, please provide any evidence that I am a pompous jerk other than my response to you in this thread.

Or were you just shooting your mouth off again, like when you repeatedly posted the word “DIE” in the Pit?

I feel the need to talk to down to you because every post I saw from you before the one I made earlier was really pathetically immature.

Do you really understand what you are saying here? Pepperlandgirl is actually quite a good poet IMO.

And anyways, she commented because earlier you said that “since I want to be an actress (math) will be of no use to me in my career.” So given that expressed attitude, why would poetry be important to an actress? Since it is a passion for you, as you said afterwards, then it makes perfect sense.

Pepper was not being rude - when she’s rude, it’s quite unambiguous I’m afraid. Please, I beg of you, do not taunt Happy Fun Ball…

You know what. I don’t want to waste my time any more. Do you not understand that I have feelings? I’ve been trying to explain myself to everyone, but I’m just not getting through. I was trying to get my frustration about not caring abou algebra right now, and people are turning me into an immature, empty-headed stereotype of a teenager. You don’t understand at all. I take back everything I said, because obviously nobody understood me anyway. I wasn’t trying to attack anyone, I was simply trying to defend myself. With so many people coming at me at once, I got emotional. My life is falling apart right now, but why should I expect any of you to understand? I use these boards to get out my immature, crazed thoughts. I have to keep it all inside at other times.

I hereby retract all prior statements because I’ve just relaized how STUPID I sounded!! What’s wrong with me?!?!?

I am simply apathetic about my Algebra class right now and was expressing my feelings in an idiotic way. I wasn’t really saying what I meant anyway. I understand if I’ve been written off by most, or all, of the people who have posted on here. I really deserve it. I’ve written myself off.

(trying not to get involved in the angry personal debate that has grown up here… mmmmmmmmm, internet)

(a) I’m a little bit unclea as to precisely what the class is that Feelyat is taking… the only class I’ve heard of in college called Algebra is a high level theoretical class studying things like Group Theory and so forth… from the context, I don’t think that’s what’s being discussed… so, Feelyat, what precisely is it that you’re studying that seems so useless? And does it seem useless because it’s so easy? so busywork? so abstract?

(b) as for whether what you’re learning is useful, the main argument that people seem to be making, re things like checkbooks, percentages for managers, etc., is that having a general understanding of math itself is useful. Do you feel that you already have such an understanding?

© on the other hand, a slightly different argument that people are making, which I think is fundamentally valid, is that when studying math, one learns to (or practices the skill of), thinking about things in a purely logical, step-by-step, fashion, which is useful in any number of situations… however,
(i) you may already be good at thinking in this way
(ii) if this particular math class is not being taught particularly well, you may get none of the above at all

My view is that a class like that should help you get better at solving math/logic puzzles, and I would contend that that type of thinking is generally useful…

(d) and on yet the other hand, it’s entirely possible that your class is a big waste of time… certainly wouldn’t be the first time that had happened to someone

Here’s a concrete example for you:

If you ever work for General Electric Corp, you will have to take something called “Six Sigma Training”. GE wants every employee to take it, and you won’t be eligible for promotion until you do (BTW, NBC is part of GE, so there’s a show-biz connection). That includes GE lawyers, truck drivers, managers, you name it.

Anyway, I’m doing six-sigma training this week, and it’s full of fairly high level math. The very first thing our trainer said to us was, “I’m going to assume you all have a good grasp of Algebra and basic statistics.” And he wasn’t kidding.

GE is the one of the largest companies in the world. At times, it is the largest. And if you want to work for them (or Motorola, or a huge number of other companies), you’d better have a good grounding in Algebra to pass this course.

Algebra is one of those skills that will come back and serve you well at unexpected times throughout your life. If you take the effort to actually think hard and apply it in your life you will have a significant advantage over those who can’t or won’t.

And just the act of learning it will sharpen your mind and make you a better thinker and a better citizen.

And it’s great that you want to be an actress, but I hope you realize that the average actress earns less than a poverty wage from her acting. Your putting all your eggs in the actress basket is as irresponsible as a kid from Compton not bothering to study because he’s sure he’s going to be a big star in the NBA some day. He might, and you might attain your dreams, but don’t you think it might be prudent to have a fallback plan?

Boy Feelyat, I’ve never done that before!

FWIW, didn’t the semester just start? If you’re just bored with your class, it may be that the course hasn’t caught up with you yet. At the midpoint of my algebra section, I was getting points off on exams for not showing work (which I could easily do in my head.) By the end of the semester, the problems typically took at least a full 8-1/2" line to write, and I have small handwriting.

In any case, this should be the last math class in your plan, right? A BBA shouldn’t require anything more advanced than the quadratic equation. At least, that’s what an accountant friend said.

Maybe you could just work ahead in the book and only show up for tests. Oh, well, that’s what I did. (I should have tested out of College Algebra.)

Seriously, if you don’t want to worry about Algebra let me be your manager. My husband can be your accountant. We’ll take care of all that math nonsense so that you can concentrate on your craft. Really, trust us!

Cheer up. Everyone has lower level classes they don’t like.

dhanson, I already said I’m minoring in business, and I’m not even majoring in drama. I’m majoring in humanities. I also understand that Algebra is important. Besides that, this board isn’t even that much of a big deal. I was just blowing off steam because I was bored with algebra class and it seems that everyone has decided to bash everything I’ve said. Please, let’s just drop the whole thing.

<turns on megaphone>
CLASSICAL MUSIC IS POINTLESS AND STUPID!

SHORT PEOPLE SMELL LIKE OLD HAMBURGER!

BOOKS ABOUT NON-FUZZY ANIMALS SHOULDN’T EXIST!
</turns off megaphone>

What? Why is everyone attacking me? I was just letting off some steam in a private…er…I mean… You’re not even trying to see my side of things! I am a very complicated person.

Aside from the fact that vapid stupidity is not really very sexy?

Because after you’ve been brutally disillusioned about your chances of becoming an actress, you might actually have to get a job. There are a lot of jobs out there. Some pay pretty well. Some pay lousy and involve buckets, mops, and deep fryers. A lot of the well paying jobs require math skills. (Substitute any other course work you don’t feel like doing right now for math skills.)

And on the off chance that you do make it big time in Show Biz, you can use your math skills to keep from getting bilked by your manager like virtually every other star of the stage and screen.
