I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Betty and Veronica get it on but may those weren’t canon.

If [Wendy Weatherbee](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendy_Weatherbee#Wendy_Weatherbee) had a MySpace or OKCupid profile, it would definitely read “bi”.

> The point of my OP, however, is that it’s impossible for a comic book character to be secretly gay, simply because he or she has no existence beyond the pages of the book. The presupposition which the media posit simply by using the term “openly gay” when referring to Kevin is almost childlike.

It’s called the [Literary Agent Hypothesis](http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LiteraryAgentHypothesis), and is the only way that analyzing a literary work makes sense. For the duration of the analysis, you are suspending your disbelief, so you can talk about motives, character, etc. We have to temporarily grant their existence in order to do so.

It’s far from childlike. It’s academic.

They’ve had a sorta-kinda gay character before. Henry Scarpelli- one of the co-creators- used his son Glenn, a [child actor](http://funkyadog.web.infoseek.co.jp/lp.files/glennscarpelli.JPG)most famous for _One Day at a Time_, as a character, and Glenn Scarpelli (long moved on from acting) is now openly gay ([cite](http://out.com/detail.asp?id=15607)).

It is indeed childlike when intertextual dialog becomes the News at Eleven, immediately following a Cal Worthington commercial.

You mean the way it affects women in Axe commercials or in reality?

You got me there. I don’t think even Dumbledore’s coming out got that much press.
