Who finds Tyler Perry funny?

MTCicero, I never called you a racist. If you group 97% of the blak population with ‘white trash’, it’s going to get pointed out to you. So just accept that and calm down. Going all red in the face, cussin’ and huffin’ about lefties and libruls isn’t going to distract from that grouping, so relax.

Who?

He succeeded Zachary Taylor as president.

Tyler Perry’s work is preachy and predictable. I think he’s gay, I hope he’s in a stable happy relationship. He could use his experience to educate his audience. I don’t think he has that kind of courage.

You understand I’m not saying it is a black problem, per se, right? I’m saying that’s a stereotype, in popular media and in certain circles of white folks.

Well, I’m not sure which post to quote on the gay thing, but, the thing that stands out to me is that he makes sure to point out that he is a bachelor, and voices that he doesn’t have any desire to actively look for a female partner (and admitted to never having one), despite being in a great position to do so. I find that the most common reason for that type of behavior is being gay, followed by being asexual, and only then Christian-style celibate.

As for Tyler Perry’s demographic: I’d say amongst people who are churchy to the extent of refusing to watch dirty comedy. Heck, if he didn’t get old, I’d still watch him. Unfortunately, his work is very similar to the church plays I’ve seen.

What’s really weird is that he was promoted by Oprah, and that’s when he got his big break.

Thus my inclusion of the word ‘stereotypically’.

One element of this thread is seriously off-topic, and that is the discussion of white trash and rednecks, secondary to this post:

Not relevant to the main thrust of the discussion, which is more along the lines of “what do you think of Tyler Perry,” despite MTCicero’s reframing of the question.

If you [and by “you” I mean "y’all – I’m not singling anyone out] want to have the white trash discussion, please start a new thread in GD and link to it from here.

Recognizing, as I assume or at least hope its maker does, the irony of complaining about limited roles for white actors, I still thought this was funny: The 5 White Characters in Tyler Perry Movies, especially the Boss.

^ Cool. That made Perry funny again. I hadn’t noticed the white people at all.

Wait. Those four? Whut.

Consulting our records, I have discovered the following:

The Spears women sold her soul to gain her fame and fortune, as is true of many pop tarts. The entity now trading under her name is … well, you don’t need to know. Just don’t have sex with her if you can possibly avoid it.

Elvis Presley did not die in 1977; he gave up his fame and fortune for peace and quiet. He is here as a result of a heroic sacrifice, having agreed to be dragged bodily into Hell so his daughter might be freed from the dark enchantment that had caused her to be bound to Michael Jackson.

Speaking of Jacksons, the seventh US President was a straight-out, no-two-ways-about it supervillain. Ask the Cherokee. There was no question of where he was going after death.

I have no information on how the Heir of Isildur came to be in Hell; I assume there was some sort of heroic sacrifice involved, or else he came down here in an attempt to free the son of Denethor. The point is we have them both. If you object you are free to attempt to effect their release.

That may be his official story, but there was a lot about him that was left out of the books, including a fondness for she-Hobbits that ultimately led to a couple of disappearances and a lot of Isildur family heirlooms suddenly being bequeathed to a family of Tooks in exchange for silence.

Feel free to spread that story. We in the Lowerarchy are in favor of slander and misrepresenation of mighty heroes.

I don’t think he knows what “funny” is, and the little I’ve seen of his work was painful to watch… as in, jaw-hanging-open, “are you fuckin’ *kidding *me?” bad.

Gotta give him props in one respect, though: not too many drag queens find a way to rake in cash from Christian audiences.

Something I can’t stand about his stage plays (the ones I’ve seen on video) is that he drops in and out of character and sometimes ad libs on stage. You NEVER do that in a play unless there’s a fire in the place (or maybe a cell phone)- if there were a 10 Commandments of Live Theatre it would be near the top.

Example: 2:20 in this clip. I’ve seen three of his plays on video and there’s more than one of these moments in every one.

Ad libs are particularly obnoxious when you’ve rehearsed a role: it throws off actor’s timing, even somebody’s who’s gifted at ad libbing has off-moments where they can’t respond in kind, it upstages them (also a Top 5), etc… An argument could be made that it’s a throwback to Conway/Korman, but for Conway/Korman was sketch comedy which is a different critter and it was also a major part of their schtick.

That was weird, Sampiro. And also annoying because I hate when comedy devolves to, “LOOK! MAN A DRESS! WOKA WOKA!”
