I’ve been to Arizona, an open carry state. I’ve seen convenience store employees with a revolver in a holster at work.
Indeed, I did. Apologies.
I’ve decided I want some examples from The Great War, or thereabouts. I have a Colt 1991A1, which is a ‘re-issue’ of the earlier design. (So why the ‘A1’?) So I thought I’d get a Webley, a Mauser C96 ‘Broomhandle’, and a Luger. I had a random thought about six months ago regarding the legality of shoulder stocks on the C96. I didn’t have any intention of buying one at the time and said I’d rather have a Luger. But a friend told me recently about one he saw and I thought ‘What the heck?’ I’d always wanted an H&R 999, but I missed my chance to get a new one. It reminds me of the Webley, so I thought I’d look into those. It will ‘go with’ my SMLE. And I used to own a Luger, which I’d sold to get my Beretta. Getting on time to replace it. I’ll post the acquisitions as I… erm… acquire them.
Lady D, is that you? Hi honey! Nice to see you over here!
Hubby was offered a CCP/CCL when he was a district attorney- he never took them up on it.
Little brother has one, though I can’t conceive of when or where he might carry one in daily life. When working, he fairly bristles with weapons, so I imagine he likes going without!
Just make sure you check any Webley you plan on getting- the vast, vast majority (over 90%) of .455 Webleys in the US have been rechambered for .45ACP. The thing is, .45ACP is equivalent to the .455 Webley Proof Load… so you really don’t want to make a habit of firing them too often.
The easiest way to check is when you break the revolver open- the serial number should be stamped on the rear of the outer cylinder face. If you can’t see the serial number, the cylinder has been shaved to rechamber it for the slightly shorter .45ACP cartridge.
Have you got an 03 C&R FFL? I might be able to recommend some good, reputable gun dealers that can help you.
I’d love a Mauser C96, but you can’t get ammo for them here. What sort of SMLE have you got?
There are two Mk.VIs I’m looking at. One has been converted and the other one hasn’t. Webley ammunition here is about a dollar a pop, but I have so many other things to shoot that that’s not a problem.
I’m looking at two C96s. One is .30 and the other’s a ‘Red 9’. .30 Luger is still made by Fiocchi and is slightly less expensive than .455 Webley.
I don’t have a C&R FFL, but there are shops in town that will accept deliveries and handle the transfers. So if you’d like to give me some leads, my email is in my profile.
I knew someone would ask what kind of SMLE I have. It could actually be a No. 4 of some sort. I’ll have to get it out of the locker to see.
I have a CCP, and have had one for almost 20 years. I sometimes work in neighborhoods where it is obvious that I am not a resident. While most of the folks who are residents mean no harm, the small percentage who may justify a means of self protection.
This thread reminded me of my dad’s truck. Right after I got my license, I was going to drive my dad’s truck somewhere. For as long as I can remember, there has been a loaded and holstered Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum hanging from the emergency brake pedal of whatever truck my dad owned at the time.
Now, we aren’t rural by any stretch of the imagination- this was Newport Beach, CA! Like they say, I guess dad was country back when country wasn’t cool.
Anyway, I distinctly remember the end of the standard safe driving lecture, the part my friends didn’t get from their folks- if I was ever pulled over, and I had the time, get the bullets out of that gun and away from it. If I didn’t have time, I should just let it go.
Dad got that gun about 40 years ago, from my former uncle-in-law who was a CA Highway Patrolman. It has never been licensed or permitted in any way.
You’re damned skippy I never got myself pulled over in my dad’s truck! I think my mom finally made him take it out and put it up somewhere a couple of years ago.
I carry a pistol on the way to the range.
In the summer that was no problem, because open carry is legal in Virginia without a permit. But in the winter, it gets cold, and my jacket covers my holster. Rather than be an habitual miscreant, I got a permit.
I still only carry on the way to the range. Now days I walk right in front of the local FBI headquarters, on my way to the NRA range. I find it fairly, well, not ironic, but close.
Tris
Got it, use it. Long guns of my own since I could lift them. Got my first personal not to be shared pistol at 14. (S&W K-22 Target) I carried every day of my junior year (59-60)in high school. (.25 Beretta) . Still have not shot anyone I was not supposed to.
I don’t have one, but I also don’t need to have one. If I move to another state…I might get one, but I don’t carry now, and have never felt a need to. Depending on when/where I move, I might feel a need to carry, but I doubt it.

Nah, the point is to keep the hoplophobes from calling the cops every time I go grocery shopping.
Oh, I’ve been here for awhile.
Over in the corner with my guns.
Heh. Dozed off for a bit. The ‘Ding!’ of my mailbox woke me though.
