The cats slipped upstairs when we were in the LR. I heard a thud. I ran upstairs and cats flew by me to the top of the rail and onto the beam. They look unmistakably guilty. Up in the beams giving me blinkie eyes. I said in my stern Mom voice ā€œBear, what did you do?ā€ He said ā€œMeowā€ no surprise there. Meeko just looked at me like I was insane. We looked around. Nothing broken or knocked off. ---

Baby Jesus was found. The lilā€™wrekker found him and his manger in her closet. The straw was all chewed out. Iā€™m fixinā€™ him up. I gotta re-do the whole navity scene. Itā€™s all messed up. Too many Cat investigations. Iā€™m getting the squirt bottle ready. Beck is the boss of this house! I will have a neat, tidy, if eccentric, nativity scene! Oh, forget it. No one minds me. ---

Glad you found him. Keep him in that safe space until Christmas. As a child, our very Catholic family tradition was to leave Jesus out of the creche set until Santa added him during the night. I hadnā€™t realized that Santa must be an obstetrician before now. ---

Way back when we were all much younger and prettier, her (now late) Baby Brother got a little wind-up ET somewhere that was just the right size and all for what passed as a crib in 0 A.D. and as all the family gathered for the Big Day including all the aunts (all Catholic nuns) and everyone else this said little (he was in his 20s) rapscallion swapped ET for the Baby Jesus. No one noticed for several hours until one of the aunts spotted it, touched it, and it started to walk and move its arms and ------ laying on its back it looked all the world like a real baby fussing. Thus instituted a search for the real Baby Jesus and various threats and bribes being involved. All in fun and laughter; this family is Nucking Futs enough that I willingly joined it. But it became a treasured family tradition for sometime around Christmas Eve for ET to appear in the manger. He still does even though everyone except us and one aunt involved is long gone. And he always will; both are safely with us. The cousins who have to deal with all this after us know the tradition and value it as much as we do. They look forward to it the few times they get to visit over the holidays. So who knows? Maybe the cats have started a new tradition for your house. Only next year will tell. šŸ™‚ ---

Kopek, I love that story. Itā€™s funny and warm-hearted, and I can identify. When I was a kid, our creche scene included a litle ceramic doghouse. Nobody knows why. And the doghouse always, always, went up on the roof of the stable. Nobody knows why. One of my siblings has the creche scene now and still puts the doghouse on the roof. I keep imagining the look on the auntā€™s face when the Baby Jesus started moving his legs, and I smile.
