Who has discovered DURIANS were edible?

You guys are absolubly right. The taste is delicious. But the smell, I still maintain it, is pungeant, really smells like rotten eggs or French blue cheese or camembert. Having said that, I myself find the durian delicious and like its texture.
And it’s too bad we can’t find any frozen durian in their rind here in Holland. Those stink much less than real fresh ones. (Talking from experience. Got the opportunity to eat frozen ones in Canada).

What’s the matter with the smell?

It’s reaalllly good! And the taste … heavenly! The smell is just pungent but it is really acquired. I personally love the durian’s smell and taste.

http://86.1911encyclopedia.org/D/DU/DURIAN.htm (for those who have never seen the king of the fruits before):

“The fruit is spherical, and 6 to 8 in. in diameter, approaching the size of a large coco-nut; it has a hard external husk or shell, and is completely armed with strong pyramidal tubercles, meeting one another at the base, and terminating in sharp thorny points; these sometimes inflict severe injuries on persons upon whom the fruit may chance to fall when ripe. On dividing the fruit at the joins of the carpels, where the spines arch a little, it is found to contain five oval cells, each filled with a cream-coloured, glutinous, smooth pulp, in which are embedded from one to five seeds about the size of chestnuts.”
