Who here has a private office, versus who here works in a cubicle?

I work in a network operations center. Picture a kinda NASA control room. 3 looong rows of desk/workstations or whatever. I’m not sure what to call them. Each row is higher than the one in front of it (kinda like a theater). Each workstation has 2 computers; a Sun and an NT machine. The computers and monitors are inside the desk. To get to the computer (even the disk drive) you have to walk around back and open this big door like a car hood. Across the front of the room are 24 big screen rear projection monitors, with all of our network monitoring stuff up there.

Nobody “owns” any of the workstations. You can sit down and log in anywhere. Same with the phones, you log in and your phone number follows you around. I do have my very own drawer though.

Someday, if I work real hard & keep my nose clean, I hope to move up to a cubicle.

I feel extremely happy now. I’m currently working in my college, as the admissions secretary, I have my own office, a huge desk, large windows overlooking the (rather beautiful) front court of the college, and a boss who only comes to see me about once a day to sign stuff. Oh and at the moment, its quite an easy job as well, seeing as most of the admissions stuff is sorted

Mrs Furthur here. I don’t have a cubicle, nor even my own desk.
As a part-time reference librarian, I have only an in-tray and the
desk that everyone shares “on the floor.” Makes it very, very
difficult to sustain any kind of messy project, since I have
nowhere to store things or spread out for more than my shift.

I’m HR director for a group of three tech companies, so most of what I do revolves around confidential material, and that warrants an office. So I have three offices in three buildings, and I’m in each maybe once a month, for part of a day. None of them are highly special, though one looks out on Times Square, one of the others doesn’t even have a window. They’re all pretty standard with a little table so that I can chit-chat with employees.

Most of the time, though, I work at home. I have a lovely office with all of the amenities, including bathroom, cable tv and a little dog. And all just 60 paces from my bedroom and my kitchen. Can’t beat that.

Well, yeah, you can.

I used to look out on these two, beautiful skyscrapers. Some idiots changed that last fall. I still get a queer feeling when I look up and see nothing in front of me.
