Well, I used to say 23. But I’ve since changed my definition of sex, so now it’s 17. We’re still very good friends and we’re actually getting married (to different people) within weeks of each other in the same town this May. Life is odd, eh? ---

For some time now, there’s been kind of an unspoken cultural truism that “involved with a much older woman” is somehow equivalent to “gay.” I think it came from a few grotesque old actresses who acquired effeminate young male companions. But being sexually attracted to someone old enough to be your mom doesn’t make her your mom, and last I checked, all it makes you is straight. ---

Half a lifetime (mine, so far) later and I still get ten or so e-mails a day from freshman dorm-mates. Most have thrived, no matter how long they stayed. A popular quote from those who heard their mommies or real opportunity calling well before graduation: “There’s no shame in running, even by night, from disaster.” The Iliad (I think.) There is a traditional Funk Phase after separation of any kind from the college.
