I read the books of [Beverly Cleary](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beverly_Cleary) back in the 1950’s in elementary school. She’s still alive at 100! Way to go, Beverly. ---

Valerie Harper (Rhoda on “the Mary Tyler Moore Show”) was in the news a while back that she had inoperable brain tumors and six months to live. That was several years ago; in the meantime she was a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars” and even outlived Ms. Moore. ---

Jazz great Jimmy Heath is 90. I posted about seeing him play last week. Benny Golson is 88 and still touring. Bridget Bardot is 82. ---

I was surprised recently to see that Charley Pride is still alive. I didn’t have any particular reason to think that he was dead – he’s 82, so old, but not like miraculously old – other than that so many folks from his era are in fact dead. ---

Jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli is still alive at 92. He had a stroke two years ago, but he’s still performing occaisonally. ---

I just saw a post from IMDB on Facebook, pointing out that character actor [James Hong](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0393222/?ref_=nv_sr_1) turned 88 earlier this week. I’ll always think of him as the scenery-chewing David Lo Pan (“Now this really pisses me off to no end!”) in _Big Trouble in Little China_. He’s still working, too, both as an on-screen actor and as a voice artist. ---

I was a little surprised to find that James Earl Jones is still with us. (I’ve been watching the TV show “Everwood” on DVD, and last night I got to the episode where he was a guest star.) ---
