I could easily have added Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, and Sonny Rollins. Plus all kinds of artists who came from somewhere else but gained fame and acclaim in New York (Benny Goodman, Bob Dylan). Plus guys who never became hugely popular but were highly influential (The Ramones, Run DMC…). ---
