I remember reading about Uruguay’s former president Jose Mujica, who was, at the time, deemed “the world’s poorest head of state.” He lived in a modest farmhouse, dressed in old clothes, drove a beat-up old VW bug, yada yada yada. He is, of course, no longer president of Uruguay, having died a few months ago (after having long retired from the presidency anyway).

Who now holds the honor of the poorest head of state in the world?

Would the Dalai Lama count? What about the Pope? (I don’t think he actually owns all of that art, etc.)

It’s the America-hating fuckstick, of course. He’s not only ruining America, he’s turning the whole planet into a shithole. If that isn’t some piss-poor head-of-statin’, I don’t know what is.

ETA: Waitaminute, by _poorest_, did you mean “most impecunious”? That one beats the fuck out of me. Y’all carry on.

That’s a good question. I thought it might be President Zelenskyy but Google’s AI said he’s personally made millions in 2023-4. I’m not sure there’s a list of heads-of-states net worth anywhere on the web.

If you define “poorest” as having the lowest net worth, it might still be Trump. It’s not even certain that his net worth is positive, and indeed, he’s been known to brag that his net worth was negative.

This is, I think, a common situation with heads of state, many of whom are ceremonial figureheads. There’s a lot of wealth associated with them, but it isn’t personally owned by the individual holding the office. Like, King Charles is personally pretty well-off, but his worth isn’t nearly as high as the worth of all Crown property.

Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico has, according to Celebrity Net Worth (dot) com, a net worth of $200k. She is an academic, and the daughter of academics, and we all know that academia is not a path to riches. It’s possible she’s made some good investments or holds a patent or something, but it seems she’s on the poor end as far as heads of state go. She might be a candidate.

And also, $200k? While that’s a king’s ransom in Mexico, it’s hardly Croesus-style wealth. Hell, _my_ net worth is probably in that range (I own my home free and clear), and I’m comfortably Lower Middle Class.

ETA: I’m not linking to my source because I don’t think it’s a legit source. They don’t back up their claims with any evidence at all.

EETA: “In her most recent financial disclosure filed on May 30, 2025, Claudia Sheinbaum reported owning an 88-square-meter apartment purchased in 1999 for 275,000 MXN (approximately $15,000 USD), a 2013 Chevrolet Aveo valued at around 164,900 MXN (roughly $9,000 USD), and three accounts with BBVA—a checking account, a savings/investment account, and a credit card with no debt. She also declared an 8% ownership stake in two manufacturing companies, though she reported receiving no income or dividends from these holdings.” From my un-linked-to source.

We may have a winner.

I wouldn’t trust anything like AI that’s relying only on internet sources in this situation. The Russian bot farms are notorious for such disinformation - for example, the claim that when Zelenskyy was in the USA for one visting he bought his wife hundreds of thousands of jewelry on Fifth Avenue, or the allegation he took over a yatch owned by a Russian oligarch. Of course, all not true. But AI collects the aggregate of all online data and distills it without critical analysis.

(As the joke goes, he only just recently bought a suit, for the pope’s funeral.)

Before his entry into politics, Zelenskyy was a successful actor. And he’s written a few books, which are a good way of turning fame into fortune. I wouldn’t be at all surprised at a net worth of a few million.

Irish presidents are typically not wealthy at the time they are elected. The presidential salary and pension likely represent a major boost to their personal wealth.

Maybe, but is net worth really relevant when he still lives in the White House, has Mar-a-Lago and Trump Tower (even with negative worth) and gets a $400,000 presidential salary plus over $50,000 in presidential allowances for entertainment, etc.? There are many of heads of state paid less salary.

“Rich” and “poor” are all about assets & liabilities, _not_ about current income.

Lotta people, mostly those with few assets, have a real hard time separating those two ideas.

That’s why I qualified with “if you define poorest as having the lowest net worth”. There are plenty of other ways to define “rich” and “poor”; that’s just (probably) the easiest one to quantify.

I suppose there’s a distinction to be made, too, between head of state and who weilds the power. Many parliamentary governments have a prime minister that actually exercises authority, with all the prestige and social position (implying wealth opportunities) that their climb to the top may imply, and president which may be more symbolic and ceremonial, and likely awarded as a recognition of their dedication to country rather than political sway. OTOH, it’s often too a repository for used politicians who are past their best-by date.

This question is going to be notoriously difficult to answer because, especially in monarchies and dictatorships, it can be hard to distinguish between assets of the state and those of the head of state personally. Also, in case of a head of state, net wealth does not correlate well with the usual lifestyle indicators of a person’s material wealth because so much of their expenses is paid for by the state.

The Imperial Family of Japan isn’t very wealthy, and the allowances are carefully controlled.

Their private holdings were heavily taxed at the end of WWII, and a lot of properties that had been held by various imperial families were sold off. The Prince Hotel chain was initially located on land bought from the imperial family.

Ignoring the ambiguity of the question, which has been already adressed, and the Mexico case, which may be in an exceptional situation right now compared with the long term history of the country and its rulers I would suspect a scandinavian country, probably Iceland.
Iceland’s current president is **[Halla Tómasdóttir](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halla_T%C3%B3masd%C3%B3ttir)**, daughter of a plumber and a social educator.
