I have a huge soft spot for Neville Longbottom. He spends much of the books being a source of pity and incompetence. During the last three books he finally comes into his own, shaking off his shyness and fear to serve as a valued member of those fighting Voldemort. He’s just as hurt by the followers of the dark lord as Harry yet Rowling doesn’t initially hit us over the head with his back story. She slowly shows us what shaped him as a child and then invites readers to applaud as he overcomes such obstacles and emerges into maturity. I thought that was one of her most appealing stories. ---

If I had to pick an absolute favorite, it’d be Snape. I do have a soft spot for Neville and Hermione, though. ---

Tonks. Tonks is who I always wanted to be when I grew up. Or Luna. Independent minded women who lived and looked as they liked without worrying what others thought of them. In reality, I’m much more a Hermione. 😛 ---

Mad-Eye Moody, fake or real. If I were a crusty, crippled, middle-aged wizard, that’s who I’d be. I was also fond of Luna Lovegood (I had a suspicion she was sneaking the catnip). Hermione is closest to my personality, though, and her older counterpart would be McGonagall. ---

**Neville Longbottom** is the true hero of the stories. Like Harry, his family is murdered, but Neville doesn’t have powerful allies (and even a whole secret society) looking out for him. Instead Neville conquers his fears and plays a decisive role in the defeat of you-know-who. ---

I’m fond of Sirius, myself. I hated when he got killed off - I’d really been looking forward to seeing his relationship with Harry grow. Truthfully, I was not convinced that he really WAS dead, until the final book. I was sure JKR would pull a rabbit out of a hat somehow and bring him back. 🙂 ---

Yeah, I’m going with Neville for the above reasons. That point in the last book where he pulls out the sword is a bona fide Crowning Moment of Awesome. ---

Harry hating Snape got tiresome. I agree with everything said about Luna and Neville, so I will go with Mrs. Weasley. ---

Honest answer is Neville. Fun answer is Charlie because he is the only character that I still have my own image of in my head since he doesn’t appear in the movies. ---

Normally I tend to go with the old, respected wizards, so normally I would say Dumbledore. But he keeps too much information from Harry, and endangers the students of Hogwarts too often. Severus Snape. ---

Luna is my favorite. Her flighty personality overlays a core of sharp intelligence and bad-ass magical fighting ability. ---

I thought one of the best moments in the books is her fight with Bellatrix after she sees that Bellatrix is trying to murder Ginny. She calls her a bitch right before cursing her. It’s the only time any of the characters use profanity and it is perfect. ---

**Fred and George.** They are the only two that seem to realize that they have magic and can use it to do all kinds of cool things. Everyone else is just copying what was done by previous generations of Freds and Georges. **Hermione** would be next. Harry is persistent and figures out a few things on his own but Hermione carries him and Ron, who would otherwise just be dumb jocks getting by by lucking out. I also like Luna’s father, **Xenophilius Lovegood**. He’s a total crackpot. Even for a community where the most acceptable answer to questions is “a wizard did it” he’s too far out there. Hermione, competent, composed and clear-headed. How could you not love her. To bad she got stuck with Ron. Good thing she didn’t get stuck with Harry. I also have a strange love for Bellatrix. I would NOT want to run into a real person like her, but I liked the character. Insane and gives no f\*\*ks. ---
