Seriously, though, If I had to have an idol (and I don’t) it would probably be Carl Sagan - guy helped inspire a whole generation of potential scientists, and did it all while doubtless high as a kite. Gotta admire that.

Idol may be a bit too strong of a term, but Jonas Salk deserves mention.

When asked who owns the patent for the polio vaccine his team had just invented his reply was, “There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?”
