Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.” (first two verses) God very clearly commands Abraham to sacrifice his son (“as a burnt offering”, so clearly there is no weaseling about “Oh, I just meant bind him to Me in a special covenant” or anything like that). And then, just as Abraham is about to cut his son’s throat, God says “Psych!” Maybe it’s just the translation.
