This is basically a public service announcement for enterprising individuals. I’m not really a wine guy… let that be said first. But I’m sure plenty will show up “right fast like”… to use a local term 😉 Now then. Did you realize that within maybe 2-8 months you could make wine better than you’ve been paying $20+ per bottle? At a cost of less than $5 each? And if you like $12 bottles, you can make them for less than $3? It’s all true, for a VERY small investment. 🙂 ---

First of all… I’m selling nothing, though I’d be happy to recommend brands and outlets. In general, the kits come in six gallon batches. So you need a six gallon bottle (called a “carboy”), and 30 regular 750ml wine bottles. The cheaper kits contain maybe 3 gallons of varietal “grape juice”, while the better ones come with all six gallons in their own bucket. …more to come ---

Define “Good.” I’m sure you could make a drinkable wine this way, but a good one? I doubt it. ---

This reminds me of a sight gag on _Trailer Park Boys_ when they were going to have a rap concert and draw people in with free booze. Cut to a short camera shot of them cranking open a tin can of “Jiffy Wine” and diluting it with a water hose in a 55-gallon drum. I’m afraid really GOOD wine takes juuuuuuuuust a little more work than simple fermentation. ---

I’ve made my own wine. It was…ok. But my cousin actually owns a boutique winery, and has won a number of ribbons at the California State Fair and the like. Home-made wine doesn’t even come close to the nectar Bob produces. If you drink plonk, make it yourself and save. If you drink **good** wine… ---

I’ve had good homemade wine. As good as $8-$10 commerical wines. Much better than boxed wine or Boone’s Farm. But I’ve never had one as good as a $20 bottle. ---

I enjoy a glass or two of good wine. I’ve posted a thread or three. We made white wine at school and it was passable. But my tip is to go to France and buy it: you get much better prices and much more variety than in the U.K. ---
