# Who paid for building the Statue of Liberty?

The Statue of Liberty was a centennial gift from the French, which I assume means it was built in France and shipped across the sea in pieces. Who paid to reassemble it, the French or the U.S.?

(I know I’d be pissed if someone gave me a gift that cost a million dollars to put together…)

The French. But the US did have to contribute financially to the monument–while the French funded the construction and assembly of the statue itself, the Americans had to raise the money for the pedestal:
