If you were interested in a debate free of insults you would have done two things. 1. You would have posted the OP in the Great Debates. 2. Hastur, this is pathetic. I’ve attempted twice now to engage you in debate and you’ve ignored it. The second time I posted that you ignored my first attempt. If you think my arguments are horseshit then fine, ignore them. There are other people also trying to debate you. You ignore them as well. If you were at all interested in actually debating this issue rather than just _claiming_ to want to debate this issue you would actually debate the issue! Instead you get into pissing contests because that seems so much easier to post. Fine. Go ahead and do that. I’ve got studying to do; I’m done with this thread. ---

I thought most (well, all that I can think of) of the responses here were rational, weren’t “attacking”. They were discussing excellent points, and trying to start an articulate debate. All this in response to someone who writes **FUCK YOU** in his OP. And yet Hastur _still_ tries to play the martyr, and claim that we’re all just a bunch of big meanies? Won’t wash. All that has been written here is still here, in black and white. I don’t see anyone being “attacked” here. I think everyone has been pretty civil, especially since the tone of the OP ( **FUCK YOU** ) wasn’t exactly civil. I think what happened here is blatantly obvious. Hastur wrote an OP, perhaps in haste, and did not anticipate the respsonses. Which were (I think) pretty good rebuttals. So what does Hastur do? Not admit that _maybe_ he hadn’t thought out his OP thoroughly…_nooooo_. Instead, he ignores the well-thought-out rebuttals. He huffs and puffs and claims that we are all just SO mean. _We_ refuse to debate properly. It’s all US. Yeah. That’s it. ---

Hastur, Having lived in the DR for over ten years, I can assure you that impregnating 11 year old children is **not** within the accepted traditional customs of that society. As for the particular laws covering sex with minors, I am afraid that for the most part, they wouldn’t be worth the paper they are written on. This is a Third World nation we are concerned with, where corruption meets poverty and illiteracy. Unfortunately, with such a sad state of affairs, it is not uncommon for children to be abused in a myriad of ways. When you have kids engaged in prostitution catering to perverts of either sex, being exploited as quasi-slave laborers or wandering the streets, begging and hustling for their next meal, a pregnant eleven year old girl is not exactly considered newsworthy. Instead, this is the kind of incident usually ‘resolved’ by the families of those involved. Depending on the education level, in this predominantly Catholic but violent nation, that could mean anything from arranging some type of ‘marriage’ to a deadly confrontation between some of the parties involved. Of course, the latter solution, will find its way into the tabloids. A day late and a dollar short. However, there _are_ good people working extremely hard to help these kids and this country. Whether they be volunteers, clergy, teachers or even some well-meaning, government officials – and there are some – the problem here is not one of judgment. Quite the opposite really, instead of standing idly by, these are the people that took a stand and are trying to right what is obviously a sordid situation. Heroes in my book, all of them, and instead of getting into a battle of semantics over their reasons, I find them worthy of the highest praise. Along the same lines, I’m sure you understand how I could find the indignation of those that posted on that particular thread, completely _justified_. And if you believe a word I’ve written, I would expect no less from you. ---

Yay RedFury! And your comments illuminate another problem with some cultural relativists. There is a world of difference between saying that we should consider the specific cultural mores of a people before making a judgement, and saying that people in other cultures have a buch of different beliefs, so we shouldn’t bother considering any culture’s mores specifically. The former is a lot of hard work, what with having to actually do some research and determine what the values of a specific culture are. The latter is much easier, but carries with it the assumption that other cultures have no real values at all. In this case, Hastur chose the lesser path. My hope is that in the future, he willnot assume that all other cultures are barbarians. ---

Speaking as the starter of the illustrious condom thread, I would like to say the following things: - I do not think it’s a good idea for an HIV positive 18 year old and a 15 year old to have sex. - My opinion was not sought in this instance, nor did it matter. This boy was part of an internet community that I moderate. Think of it as a SDMB via email. I was asked about condom breakage and safe sex, and I provided the information I knew and sought out that which I did not. This, to me, is moral. - I strongly resent the implication that I was encouraging the boy to boink someone who was positive. He knows that I’m less than thrilled about it. - I also resent a number of posters who fail to understand what a GQ is and insisted on “taking a stand against immorality” or what have you in a thread about condom breakage. I’m not interested in morality debates, I just wanted to find out information. ---
