Oops, wrong movie. I was thinking of Lives of a Bengal Lancer, 5 years later, where he dallied with a male co-star, possibly Richard Cromwell (bad memory, the curse of the middle-aged!). Again, all rumor of course.

Shows you how little I know about male prettiness. I think Humphrey Bogat is darn good looking. Some watch company is using still in their ads, they always catch my eye.

In the same way, Frank Sinatra as a young singer (not as an actor) always seemed handsome.

On the other hand, jug-earred Fred Astaire looked good, but I credit his wardrobe and the fact he could dance like all get-out. Still good-looking taken as a whole.

All the James Bonds dressed up nice, but they seemed to be fake, trying too hard. I did buy a tie-it-youself bow tie to wear with my formals, just to look like Bond. James, Bond.

> It’s odd, but the classic hotties are guys (with the exception perhaps of Valentino and James Dean) you don’t particularly care about seeing nekkid, while the current hotties are marketed that way (in fact, most you’ve seen nekkid on screen). I wonder when the dividing line was that good butts and bodies became more important.

I find it hard to believe that most of the “classic” guys in this list were supposed to be really handsome, moreso that people now still consider them to be. They mostly look like bankers and lawyers to me; guys who cleaned up _okay_ and looked professional, but other than that eh. Valentino and Newman are the only ones I’d come up with the idea that they were attractive without someone suggesting it first. (Cool Hand Luke, oh man…)

On the other hand, I also don’t think Jude Law(except in eXistenZ), Ewain McGregor, Hugh Grant, George Clooney, Tobey Maquire etc who are so popular with some ladies are anything much to look at now, either. Maybe it means the “classic heartthrob” sampling size is just too small for someone of my tastes. And maybe if more of them had nixed the facial hair…

Eek, this one’s even harder than the female one. OK:

There’s no way I can pick just five. Let’s try.

First of all, Johnny Depp. This guy is the hottest human being alive, probably the hottest human being to ever walk the Earth. Even when he’s shabby and dirty, he’s flaming hot.

Then, Elvis Presley as a young man. He was fucking prettier than most women.

Jude Law. He has the kind of perfect face that you almost want to tale a baseball bat to just so he won’t look so bloody perfect.

Val Kilmer, especially in his younger days. I could do nasty nasty things to _Top Secret_-era Val Kilmer. Nasty things.

Brad Pitt is everything they say about him. Just copy what I said about Jude Law.

OK, that’s five. Runner-ups and honourable mentions: Ewan McGregor, Christian Bale, Timothy Dalton, Jared Leto.

[Gene Kelly](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000037/)
For him, it’s as much about the dancing as his looks. Up until I saw _An American in Paris_ I’d just seen Fred Astaire. Astaire is beautiful and fluid. Gene Kelly is lighting and strength. D-A-M-N-!

I’m female and straight, and it depresses me to see how many people have mentioned Johnny Depp. He does _nothing_ for me.

1. Alan Rickman
2. John Travolta
3. Alan Rickman
4. Scott Bakula
5. Alan Rickman

Why would it depress you?

The thing about Johnny Depp is that he’s not only abso-fricking-tively gorgeous, he’s just too damn good an actor to be true. Skill is sexy, and he’s good at what he does. It’s everything about him - the way he talks, the way he moves, the way he is (well, seems to be; I’ve never met him), the sense of humour - and to top it all off he’s as beautiful as a trackless snowfield.

I have a (straight female) friend who honestly thinks that Rickman is sexy… as [Snape](http://home.arcor.de/estherkolbe/snape/snape7.jpg)! (Rickman I can see, especially the voice, but Snape is dirty and greasy looking.)
