Is it possible that what you’re saying here is the planned pitch? _Oh, sure, I could’ve picked someone who’d get me more voters,_ he could say. _But I demonstrably didn’t do that; I selected the person I believe is the best choice to take over if the next bullet doesn’t miss. If I’d wanted to pander to this or that group, I would’ve; but I’ve chosen to put the country first._

Something like that?
