That is pretty funny.

To be entirely fair, while Jeep is synonymous with offroading in people’s minds, and I have no doubt that a lot of people choose Jeeps for that reason, not all Jeeps are particularly good at going offroad – many of them don’t even have four-wheel drive.

That is a tiny but passionate fanbase of people who are excited about [an obscure and somewhat underperforming grand tourer](https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a46972858/1992-subaru-svx-archive-test/). It was an interesting concept with good handling and a lot of technological innovations but hampered by inadequate acceleration, a weak transmission, and generally pretty forgettable today compared to the Mitsubishi 3000GT, the Nissan Z32 300ZX/Fairlady Z, and of course the Acura NSX.

I had the first Honda Insight, the early hybrid (pre-Prius) with the rear wheel skirts.

(My kids laughed at it, and I said “At the end of the last century, THIS is what they thought the future would look like.”)

Worst thing about it dying is that I miss the folks in that community.

I see far more Tacomas, 4Runners, FJ Cuisers, and the pre-J100 Land Cruisers on forest trails and backroads than I do any Jeeps. There is a certainly a crowd that outfits CJs and Cherokees for rockcrawling but the vast majority of Jeeps never see gravel or dirt. Like “Harleys”, they’re now more of a market-oriented lifestyle than a practical vehicle.

I rented a first generation Insight on _Okinawa-hontō_, carrying around a folding kayak, camera gear, and a variety of other hardware. I was cringing at how slow and difficult it might be to go to remote locations, but honestly it was perfectly fine. Of course you can’t exceed 45 mph anywhere on the island, and I think the highest point you can drive to is less than 400 m ASML, so it wasn’t exactly pushing automotive technology, but after almost a week of driving it cost me a pittance to “man-tan”.

I’ve heard “prince of darkness”.

For those who don’t know, Lucas was the company that made the electrical components on English cars; things like headlights. The Indiana Jones filmed all began with the Paramount mountain logo, which would then dissolve to a shot of a real mountain, which would lead into the movie. Except the last one, which started with the Lucasfilm logo. I think it should have dissolved to the Lucas logo on an alternator or something, and then the camera pulls back to reveal Indy working on an English car.

“Why do the British drink warm beer?”
“Because they have Lucas refrigerators.”

“A gentleman does not motor around after dark.”

Sound advice to anyone who owns a Leyland, Triumph, Austin-Healey, Morris Motors, or pre-Ford Jaguar. Lucas Electronics almost literally brought the British automotive establishment back to the Dark Ages.

Lots of ostensibly “off road” vehicles are not very good at it. Land Rover has gone in so much on luxury that some models would be terrible off-roading (nevermind whether taking such an expensive car off road is wise or not).

A British billionaire has thought the same (that the off road cars today are too luxury oriented and not capable off-roaders) so he has built a new car that supposedly addresses this (although it is still nice inside).

Some of us are over on the thread for [What's the most interesting car you saw today?](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/whats-the-most-interesting-car-you-saw-today/688889). There, only 3-4 SVXs have been spotted and reported in 10 years, and none by me. I haven’t seen an SVX in many years…

And if I did, I seriously doubt it’d be driven by a lesbian.

Thanks for the Ineos Grenadier. Never heard of that before, and I’ll keep my eye out for them. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, some people buy some interesting cars.

My last car, like I said earlier, was a Jeep Grand Cherokee. And my favorite photos of it (of us) are these.

> Like Lucas is the patron saint of darkness?

It’s usually “Prince of Darkness” in my experience.

Lucas - Inventor of the intermittent wiper.
Lucas - Inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.
The three position Lucas switch – Dim, Flicker and Off.
The Lucas motto: “Get home before dark.”
Lucas systems actually uses AC current; it just has a random frequency.

Anyway, I don’t know much about Subaru owners, but I do own a Jeep. The Jeep community in general is a very friendly bunch. It’s customary for Jeep owners to wave at other Jeep owners.

If you don’t like to wave, or you’re just too lazy, my son’s girlfriend (who also owns a Jeep) sent me a link for a fake hand posed in the typical Jeep waving position that you can stick to your dashboard so it looks like you are waving.

[![](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61iZJGcjjNL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_DpWeblab_.jpg) ](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61iZJGcjjNL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_DpWeblab_.jpg)

There is also “Ducking” aka “Duck Duck Jeep”. This started out just as someone being friendly and putting rubber ducks on other Jeep owner’s vehicles. This quickly spread all across North America. These days if you own a Jeep, there’s a good possibility that at some point you’ll come out from a store or wherever and find that someone has left a rubber duck on your Jeep.

Jeep owners typically display the ducks that they have received in their front window. So if you see a bunch of rubber ducks in a Jeep, that’s what it is all about.

There is a group of Jeep-owning women in the area who raised a bunch of money for my non-profit by having this big charity event with lots of Jeep people, so my feeling is generally positive.

My son-in-law found a cute rubber Holstein cow on his Suburu Legacy recently, with a friendly note to pass it along. It was extra funny because it happened on the agricultural research campus of our state land grant university, where we take cows **very** seriously (we have been known to call ourselves “the beef state”.

I’ve put a down payment on a vintage Suburu Outback and will pick it up next week when (if?) State Farm gets the total loss settlement to me and I’m hoping to find a rubber cow on her some day.

I will try to further the tradition of ‘nice’ Suburu owners. I habitually wear Birkenstocks, so I’m off to a good start.
