–an expletive used sarcastically to convey the experience of being profoundly underwhelmed. It seems to me that I heard this phrase a lot while growing up in western Pennsylvania. However, it is apparently not used in Florida. I’m curious about whether it’s just a regional expression, or if it is used elsewhere. Anyone else ever hear it? ---

I’ve only ever heard it as whoopie _doo_. Not ding. ---

Back home in NB (I’ve been typing that so often lately… I’m starting to feel like Rose and her “back in St. Olaf” stories…) I used to hear a very, very similar expression from my first cousin’s mouth often. As we are from the same family/region and age, I never quite figured out where she picked it up, but sometimes I’d hear other people use it, though rarely. Her expression? “Whoop-dee-ding!” Or, other times, “Whoop-dee-ding-dong!” The other times I’d heard it, they would say “Whoopidy-ding”. Make of that what you will. I, myself, have never used it. It wasn’t common, unless I was hanging out with her. ---

It’s a common expression in Michigan, except it’s usually “Whoop-dee-doo.” I never heard it quite phrased the way you have. ---

Ah no. Whoopee ding is short for Whoopee ding _do_! 😃 These, of course, are related to the ironic utterance, ‘Whoop-de-do’. I guess people thought the whole thing needed a little more pizzazz. ---

Whoopie ding - abbreviated - Sarcastic for I suppose you want me to ring the town bell and tell them all about this. Whoopie ding dong, the wicked witch is dead - You’re not impressed and you want them too suffer all day from Munchkins singing “Ding dong the wicked witch is dead.” I have used them all since childhood in Wisconsin. ---

Whoop-dee-doo is what I heard most often growing up in Toronto, sometimes shortened to Whoopie-doo. It was usually accompanied by a vertical finger-twirling motion. ---

Anybody else do that to accompany ther “whoopie-whatever” or was that a Toronto thing? ---

According to a short television news item last fall, Wisconsin is the battle ground for east meets west language usage and idioms. The twirling your finger at the same time, is occasionally done. ---
