I studied a martial art that had a lot of throws and falling and this was an accepted bit of advice. So maybe she wasn’t being nasty.
Nonetheless, a couple years ago I was out for a run, tripped on a “thing” half buried in the ground and my years of training deserted me causing me to end up with a torn rotator cuff that needed surgery and PT to heal.
Hope your recovery comes quick and easy Doc-I’ve-not-had-much-interaction-with-but-respect-from-postings.
FWIW you are unlikely to have damaged the rotator tendons if there was enough force to crack the humerus and remove skin from the palm.
Boxers fractures are common but generally from punching walls. You might get one in a fall if your hands were clenched and hit the ground. FOOSH Colles fractures are also common. There are many other hand and upper limb fractures. ER doctors will assume their is a scaphoid fracture if the snuffbox is tender even if the X-ray initially looks normal, repeating it in 10 days.
Damn! You broke the #1 rule for retirement: never fall (how we’re supposed to be sure of that while still getting out and being active, no one told me yet).
Decades ago, when she was about 70, my mom tripped over (ironically) some caution tape and shattered her elbow. It was a nasty injury, but it healed up beautifully despite her osteopenia. I hope your shoulder mends quickly and completely as well!
Best wishes for a rapid return to full health, QtM. On the one hand, retirement is the best time to be ill/injured, on the other hand, it’s the worst time.
thanks for your kind wishes and support. twas a long uncomfy night in the recliner chair but the pain’s manageable, like a dull toothache most of the time. i see ortho in less than 48 hours.
i have had recent good news vis a vis my cancer; psa fell to 0.03 after rad/hormone rx, so that’s nice, and i will discuss that with rad onc this week also.
meanwhile maple syrup and 6 year old cheddar give me comfort (the former on groats and waffles, the latter on english muffins).
I am very sorry to read this, but I am not going to tell a doctor what kind of lesions you can get from falling in which way and what is the worst. Not even an hypochondriac would need that. Now take up your stethoscope, get better and walk! Yeah, I repeat myself sometimes… again and again.
Its good that you hustled through your maple syrup activities early this year and finished up before this all happened. Wishing you a speedy recovery and great news on the cancer front. Enjoy some sweetness now.
Ow. And eew. And ow. I dropped myself on the top of my shoulder in karate once, on a mat, and while there was nothing like a crack, just a bruise and maybe a sprain, it was like a year before shit felt normal again. It just ACHED forever!!
Best of luck for a speedy and successful recovery, Doc! And, yaknow, continued success on your sobriety and all that.
shoulder injuries are among the most extremely painful orthopedic traumas. i’ve had a half dozen othopods inform me of that, including my current ortho doc, who wasn’t even born yet when i graduated med school. a young whippersnapper!
so far in my life my poor left humerus/shoulder has sustained a midshaft fracture (plane crash 1974), rotator cuff 3 tendon blowout requiring repair and clavicle joint revision 2013, and now this. recovery from that 2013 event and surgery took over a year and left me with mild pain.
the current pain is slowly decreasing but the nights are long. fortunately i have a comfy chair to sleep in, and i’m binge-watching nerd of the rings videos on youtube,
