I think Lucas made a terrible decision in his direction, but I have nothing but sympathy for the actor now. Thereā€™s even a scene where Kylo Ren is whining about how Rei is giving him a hard time, and General Hux walks in and steals the show. I was sitting there in the theatre thinking, ā€œWow! Heā€™s not even good at being a bad guy.ā€ When did you ever see one of the random Imperial Moffs be more competent than Darth Vader? Never! Itā€™s all meant to underline that Kylo Ren barely knows what he is doing, so later in the movie he tries to over-compensate for his mediocre supervillainy. ---

I think Kylo Ren is a great villain and I love how heā€™s portrayed as vulnerable. Iā€™m looking forward to seeing how the character evolves over the next two films. Jar Jar is the most horrifying thing Iā€™ve ever seen on film, a clear indication that Lucas lost his mind. ---

Well, Jar-Jar was _supposed_ to be a lighthearted element in a revival of an old-fashioned space adventure, and a demonstration of the exciting state of the art in special effects animation; while Kylo was _supposed_ to be a sullen, vicious figure, fanatically obsessed both with an impossibly idealized image of the Star Wars Empire and itā€™s biggest figures at their prime, and with the aggrandizement of his position and his needs; reacting with disproportionate rage when he meets even the slightest resistanceā€¦ And heā€™s also got sillier hair. šŸ˜ƒ ---

But his mouth is wider, ears are larger, nose is wider, etc. Hold your hand over one side and the other and theyā€™re nothing alike, visual tricks aside. Plus itā€™s (probably intentionally) done in black and white to wash out differences and hide the difference in skin tone. ---

Jar Jar was a terrible idea executed terribly and given way too much screen time. The weird racist undertones donā€™t help, but really heā€™s annoying, has no reason to be in the scenes that heā€™s in, and gets so much screen time you canā€™t just tune him out. Kylo Ren is a good villain who has more complexity and story shown than ā€˜I TURN UP TO FIGHT THE HEROS AND I HAVE A DOUBLE SABERā€™ Maul or ā€˜I LEAD THE ENEMY AND HAVE FOUR SABERSā€™ Grievous. The scene where Vader is force choking a guy and Grand Moff Tarkin verbally slaps him down like heā€™s a petulant child, showing whoā€™s actually in charge. The vibe of that scene is ā€œVader, cut it out, thereā€™s work for the grownups hereā€. ---
