There is some speculation in the thread discussing the Daltry/Townsend debacle yesterday, but I thought it could do with its own thread. Who do you think should play the next Superbowl halftime? Maybe who would you want to see, and who do you think they would book? They aren’t going to be booking any of my favorites (tho SCOTS would ROCK that bowl!) But I’d like to see someone up there at least slightly younger than my 49 years. Why not someone like Beyonce or Black Eyed Peas? I’m not a huge fan of either, but would rather see someone who is somewhat relevant than another aged has been. Instead, I’d see them going with someone like John Mellenkamp. Or maybe Bowie or Elton John… ---

I mentioned the Black Eyed Peas in the other thread. They’re a few notches above most everything else on the Top 40, have a good, high intensity sound and put on a kick ass live show. But since they’re under 40, I’d imagine they’d have to sign a mile-long contract and put their children up as collateral to ensure there’s no wardrobe malfunctions. I think it would be awesome to see Rush. “Tom Sawyer” and “Limelight” would just feel so right for the occasion. But prog rock still seems to be a foreign concept to TPTB. ---

How about John Fogerty? After the Who, I flipped over to Palladia to show my buddy the difference between TV formats (720 vs 1080), and there was a John Fogerty concert playing. He would be perfect for a half time show: great live singer and great catalog of songs that everyone knows (although “Centerfield” probably wouldn’t be on the playlist). ---

I’d love to see either of the Becks out there. Jeff is still rockin’ it up and sounding awesome. Or we could have Beck the Younger playing Readymade, Jackass and, of course, Loser. ---

I don’t think they’d put Elton John on as I’m sure some people would be upset with an openly gay performer. However, I could easily see Billy Joel next year. ---

What kind of “relevance” are you seeking for 12 minutes of music, paid for by an organization seeking to entice every American demographic to continue watching commercials during a game break? As an aged has-been (or never-was) myself, I’m a bit saddened that what’s left of The Who is considered that safe. I wish they’d have played “Fiddle About,” “Pictures of Lily,” and “I’m a Boy,” and left the NFL writhing in agony. ---

I’ve been telling everyone they should book Ozzy Osbourne! What a cool halftime show would that be??!!! I’m surprised they haven’t had Bon Jovi yet. If they want mainstream, safe acts why not have a lineup of country singers like Tim and Faith McGraw, Brad Paisley (singing “Alcohol”, natch) and Garth Brooks? That would be more entertaining than The Who. ---
