> Yes, just as Afghanistan beat the Soviet Union, North Vietnam beat the United States, and the insurgents in Iraq are currently beating the United States. And why would you assume conventional forces only?

We were talking about North Korea earlier - not North Vietnam

Vietnam is no problem, they are off the nutters list, and have been since they sorted out Pol Pot in Cambodia.

Afghanistan has beaten everyone since Alexander.
If we had stuck to killing non Afghani Taliban and ignoring the poppies, we could be heroes out there.

Iraq is a problem.
I do not think that we (the UK) should have been involved

- at the time I thought we could show the USA a little about crowd control

On the plus side it is providing ‘war brides’, so in 25 years time the USA will understand the Middle East

I suppose one could ship out anyone with an IQ over 100 and leave the rest to rot.

That might not be a bad solution

- Africanization of Iraq - but with aircraft rather than fishing boats

If you have ever tasted an Iraqi shish kebab then you would welcome their dentists, doctors, engineers setting up next to you.

Perhaps the next form of pacification is to ‘brain drain’

- and leave the rest to rot

Because as of this time thre is no evidence that Iran has done anything wrong. They say they are trying to get Nuclear power because it will extend the life of the limited oil they have. It fuels their economy.
I saw a technical program on Link tv describing the difficulty that they re having getting the program going. According to the tecchnical experts ,they are a long way from getting nuclear power going. They are no where close to bombs. They have demonstrated no effort to go after them either. It is not a simple thing to go from peaceful to Bombs.
They have according to the UN and international law a right to try to obtain nuclear power plants.Other cpuntries are allowed to make money helping them. It is capitalism after all.

And its in everyone’s best interestes for every country to have nuclear power, simply for the savings in fossil fuels. Not to mention, it’s cheap power.

Well how much do you know about USA foreign policy in 1975 ?
And how much do you know why the Neanderthals do war dances ?

Actually Neanderthals still exist, they generally play rugby and are so honest that the supposedly extinct Cro Magnons like to use them as intermediaries.

About 70% of Iranians are thick
About 1% are mad Ayotullahs

Pick out the best, and let the rest rot.

> The problem is, they aren’t building the economy to pick up the slack once the oil goes by-by…at least not IMHO. I think that, worthy though they are, it would be wiser to spend that vast amount of wealth on building up a self sustaining economy divorced from oil.

Well, Chavez **is** giving Venezuela its very own [automatic-weapons industry!](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=7617091&postcount=31)🙂

That’s a step forward, right, guys? Can’t have a free republic without automatic weapons! Lots of Dopers say so! 😉

> Huh? Are you seriously saying Iran could beat either Russia or China in a war? Iran probably can’t handle Israel. No way they can beat Russia or China, even assuming conventional forces only.

How would **conventional** warfare between China and Iran even be possible? How would either country’s troops reach the other’s territory? The U.S. and British navies control all the sea lanes.

If it came down to Iran vs. Russia, I suspect Russia would win, having a huge head-start in massive conventional forces – but it won’t come to that; the two are making friends now.

Iraqi shish kebab is hard on the teeth?

😕 How is that supposed to make Iraq any more stable, peaceful, democratic or prosperous?

I would agree enthusiastically, except that the same technology has potential applications not entirely peaceful.

There was an old saying (probably on a bumpersticker or some such) that went something like: Freedom through maximum firepower!

😛

You mean the US, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, various other wealthy countries and individuals, and Afghanistan beat the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.
