Why are Kirby vacuums sold only door to door and not in stores?

Years ago someone came around selling vacuum cleaners. I swung the door open enough to show him our painted plywood floors with throw rugs everywhere (the house was [and is] still a work in progress). He thanked me for my time and left.

We’ve bought a few vacuums over the years but the best is still our old Hoover upright, which belonged to Mr. S’s mother, who died in 1986. No idea how old it really is. About 10 years ago we had the bag and cord replaced; the zipper on the bag was rusty because our late dog liked to pee on it  and I think the cord was part of the replacement kit. Never saw a vacuum that was better on dog hair. That thing has a motor like a jet engine.
