# Why are New Orleans Katrina refugees so reviled by the communities that took them in?

On the California/Okie hijack…

I grew up in California, and for several years in junior high and high school (this is in the mid-90s), I went to a summer camp that had lots of campers from the Central Valley. On more than one occasion, I heard people derogatorily refer to Okies, or make fun of someone’s Okie accent. (There are plenty of born-and-bred Californians whose accents aren’t far removed from their dust bowl refugee ancestors.)
