Most plants we eat are “genetically enhanced.” You think corn or potatoes or rice were appetizing in their original wild state? It took a lot of selective breeding to make them into what we know as food.
“Selective breeding” is a lot different to me than genertically engineered .
But again, and my apologies, so many terms: “genertically altered, genetically engineered, genetically manipulated, and genetically enhanced …”
WTF are we really talking about when we say that we oppose genetically … (whatever …) crops?
How, exactly?
Suppose something about my story were true
- as it happens it is
I am not a virologist, but smallpox is a damn sight less dangerous than messing with the ‘horror’
I’m not saying that your story isn’t true. Merely that you are misinterpreting what happened.
Did you glace at those cites that I provided? Those are published reports of genetic engineering of influenza virus. Engineering influenza is not uncommon. It is quite viable science, is routinely published, and could not conceivably be punishable for any reason; in short, no one would bat an eyelash at engineering influenza virus.
If your friend of a friend’s unnamed scientist was in fact working with influenza and was subsequently fired, it is quite impossible that A resulted in B.
Not to further jump on you, but the fact that you used the word “mutants” to describe the results of his engineering rather than the more accurate word, "recombinant ", indicates that much of your fear about this supposed dangerous research that he was performing is based on science fiction movies, rather than a grasp of genetic engineering.
Hmmmm … that would explain it having a Japanese name, and not a Chinese one, huh? :smack:
He was not a friend of a friend, the lass was the wife of a friend, I liked her immensely. He treated her.
Actually another friend of mine is one of the UK’s most senior scientists working on flu - at one time he worked on HIV
- ah, yes and on Prions - they had ‘disposable labs’ for that
The problem with the Egyptian guy is that he was not working in a sufficiently controlled environment.
I’m quite sure he was not sacked.
I am speechless at you saying: ‘in short, no one would bat an eyelash at engineering influenza virus.’
Anyone vaguely responsible would go through the roof.
Sure it happens, thats why they were digging up 1918 corpses, but they are very careful.
It is a bit like someone building a nuclear reactor in their garden shed.
Again, you’re simply wrong . This lab is in Houston, Texas.
(In case you don’t feel like clicking the link, the title of the paper is “Stimulation of human T cells by an influenza A vector expressing a CTL epitope from the HER-2/neu protooncogene results in higher numbers of antigen-specific TCRhi cells than stimulation with peptide. Divergent roles of IL-2 and IL-15.” They are using influenza as a vector to target tumor cells; just what you are so up in arms about.
They are engineering influenza virus. They are doing it quite openly, and with funding. No one cares because it is not a big deal.
Fine, I am wrong
I hallucinated that I live near the UK flu vaccine establishment
Avril did not die of cancer, and I did not hear that the Egyptian guy created a furore. Something I did not hear of separately, and clock that it was the same guy.
You are totally right, in fact I’ll go so far as to say that Porton Down investigates protiens. (not that I live anywhere near there)
In future I shall put my trust in you, rather than the government scientist and his compadres whose brains I have picked over the last 20 years.
Don’t be frigging stupid, some strains are dead, others have them petrified.
If there was such a furor over this, as yet, named Egyptian surgeon that you heard about, then providing a citation about the situation, rather than sarcastic handwaving, should be quite straightforward, no?
http://www.nicelytoasted.net/index.php/burnt/comments/frankenplants/ We see lots of sci fi movies showing alien or mutated plants and animals going on a rampage. Maybe they will.
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,20088895-30417,00.html Just ran into this
Go find it yourself
- I have a suspicion that you are not remotely interested
BTW it is ‘furore’ and ‘unnamed’
If I thought you were interested I would have spent more time, or got someone to dig it out, but as it is … you are just playing Stephen Potter games.
Quite amusing, but you would not grasp the real meaning.
