It’s a form of price discrimination.
The hotel charges a lower price for those who complain and a higher price for those who don’t. Seriously.

Interesting. In many cities, a convention gets a rebate if it books a certain number of room nights in that city for the convention. There are all sorts of sneaky things going on with hotels and convention centers, who will do a lot to get a big conference in. I’ve never been treated better than when I was general chair of one of these.
