Its not just E-mail scams, corruption is rife in the country itself and over here in the U.K.Nigerian immigrants pulling off huge welfare scams are quite common, people claiming under thirty different names is not unusual, and thats just the ones we find out about.
There is a charity called A Laptop for every Child and one of the first if not THE first country they are giving away Lts to is …you’ve guessed it!
A few things to think about:
[ul]
[li]Most of us know little about Nigeria If someone talked about how they are Chinese royalty recently ousted in a coup, we’d say “wait, what? why havn’t I heard of any of these people or events.” But most of our African history is a bit shaky and so we are less likely to notice that the people and events in these letters never happened. [/li][li]Nigeria has a large poor urban population Nigeria is very populated and there are a ton of unemployed young men with nothing better to do than spend hours at their brother’s Internet cafe (generally friends of the owners/workers can hang out for free when there are no paying customers.) Computers are common enough that people can learn to use them pretty easily.[/li][li]Nigeria has a large amount of corruption It’s mind boggling. [/li][li]Law enforcement is pretty much non-existant To make an arrest, police have to be bribed more than the perp bribes them. And then it could take years for there to be any movement on a case. There is simply nobody persuing these cases.[/li][li]The culture tends to stick with the “tried and true” In my experience, once somebody finds something that works, everyone aound them wants to do that exact same thing, even if it’s not profitable. This is why if you walk down a street in Nigeria you will see dozens of phone call boxes side by side, even though there cannot possibly be enough business to support them. Chances are somebody tried this once and succeeded, and then everyone he knew started to do it. [/li][/ul]
Really? I would think an algorithm like this would catch them all…
If text has (country=Nigeria) and (money=??,000,000*) and (currency=USD or currency = US Dollars) then (Strong Bad->DELETED!)
Like I said, they got something like $200K out of a doctor. What was the question?
People are gullible.
The Nigerians even have a song that’s featured on YouTube: I will take your money. I will make your money disappear.
Life is good.
