This has nothing to do with the definition of the poverty level. It has to do with basic mathematical reality.

When you are talking about actual things that exist, like money, you literally cannot have an income that is 130% below any number, because reducing any number by more than 100% gives you a negative number.

It would be just as wrong to say “My income is 130% below LeBron James’ income.” It’s not. It might be 99.95% lower than James’ income, but it can’t be more than 100% lower.

Imagine it this way: I give you a basket filled with $100 bills, and ask you to remove 130% of the money in the basket. How are you going to do it?

Check with the US government. Rumour has it they have removed more than 20 x10^12 dollars from the basket

Why are winners of millions of dollars in a lottery receiving stimulus checks (assuming income was sufficiently low on their most recently field tax return)? Because is quicker to base eligibility on a tax return that IRS has. Similarly somebody with no income in 2019 and 2020 could be ineligible.

They zero income group would need to fill a special form identifying dependents and reporting income = 0

Sorry I came to this thread late, but are you sure about this? From perusing the IRS website it seems it’s almost impossible not to qualify for a stimulus payment, as long as (a) your income is below the cutoff amount, and (b) you are not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return. Below a certain income level, or in cases of no income, filing a tax return isn’t required, yet the IRS website provides a way to notify them of your banking info so they can direct deposit the money.

I think you are correct. When everyone else was getting their money, I heard crickets. Yesterday my paper check came in the mail. The dispensary I get my medical marijuana from is having a “stimulus sale”, offering discounts for large purchases, so mine is spent.

My gf’s income is roughly twice mine. She got a check a few days ago. She wouldn’t tell me how much she got, but she gave it to the food bank. At first I thought she meant she bought food there and I was all confused.
