Why are the prices of hard drives so high? Will they go down?

Mmmm 60TB hard drive, so much ASCII pr0n.

I find it impossible to have a need for that much data; I have only about 700 MB of personal data on my computer (which has a 200 GB hard drive, because that is more than enough and they are much cheaper, if they even sell 200 GB hard drives anymore); that is from the past 10 years or so. Of course, this is almost all stuff that I made myself (such as computer code and HTML files, the latter I recently converted some older ones from MS Word, reducing the size of those by around 50%) and doesn’t include digital camera pictures (raw files), music or videos; one can only create so much data when it is mostly text (of course, that includes compiled code and images, which together take up more space than the text files). This is also one of the cases where a SSD, say 32 GB, could easily be used for the OS/programs and data files; as opposed to the current recommendation of using a SSD only for the OS.
