Actually, I think there’s more than a little truth in that. Appealing to hate and ignorance is a very effective way to get votes. Why go around tryng to convince people of a specific platform when you can just appeal to their baser notions?
Simple, down-home folks with traditional values want a President that reflects those values. To invoke God, Guns, Abortion, and War resonates with them. The Republicans do this, the Democrats can’t seem to. The Republicans are intellectually dishonest in that they pander to these values in order to get the “heartland vote”, since they never really try to enact legislation reflecting these values except for show (i.e. proposing amendments wrt flag-burning, gay marriage, abortion, etc. that they know darn well won’t pass or won’t pass constitutional muster). Throw in an unaffordable tax break that (folks with traditional values) never see much of, but hey! It’s free money, yahooo!
Democrats pander to the ideal that they help people and aren’t warlike and are more focused on the economy, etc. They are not really doing a very good job of it. Also they seem to choose issues with less visceral reaction involved, so again, not as effective.
So in a nutshell, the GOP carefully crafts their message to pander to ret-…um, people with traditional values, while the Democratic Party panders to mor-…um, people altruistic values. Traditional values are simpler and easier to exploit for political purposes than the more complex altruistic ones.
Unfortunately (for the rest of us), for the traditional values folks, Bush is their man, and that won’t change even though his administration at least tacitly supported the abuse of prisoners, even though he will continue to send their sons and daughters (in disproportionate numbers) to their deaths and their jobs overseas.

Well, yes, I’m serious - you asserted via the title and your OP ‘why are there so many morons in the GoP?’ which assumes that there is, in fact, a ‘higher than average/expected’ amount of folks there. I did, you know, give you the alternative possability - that you admit that you pulled that out of yourass and merely focus on “gee, how stupid is it to attack Kerry 'cause he ‘looks French’ or speaks French”. This would be a much more defensible position for you to take. Instead you keep on pounding home that there are folks who hold idiotic positions w/in the GOP (something that not many would dispute, since it’s assumed that in any large group you’ll have some level of fringe elements).
Suggesting that Rush’s listeners all suscribe to all of his positions is not particularly defensible either (some listen for amusement, some listen to get amunition against him, some believe his tripe - he’s an entertainer after all - would you suggest that all Mel Gibson fans suscibe to his ideology? I wouldn’t). Ditto for numbers of books Ann Coulter sold (some were bulk purchases as gifts, some would have been for jokes, some would have been 'cause they’re true believers, some would have to get amunition etc.).
Just 'cause this is the Pit doesn’t mean (as I pointed out before) that you can say anything you want and not expect to get challenged on the veracity of it.
Again I suggest an alternative position “anyone who derides Kerry for idiotic reasons such as that the ‘looks French’ ‘has a rich wife’ or ‘speaks French’ does not appear to have a rational foundation for their position”.

I would have thought that the Republican party’s nomination and support for George W. Bush as President of the United States would serve as incontrovertible proof that Republicans == morons.
