Why are there so many freaking retards in the Republican party?

So the Republican party is pro-gay rights because some members are gay or some players have gay relatives or friends? And the Democrats aren’t anti-gun because some running for Presidential canidate owns 3 guns? Yeah, sure.

The Democrats (Congresses and Bill Clinton) and their legislation have already taken tremendous amount of guns and gun accessories from the marketplace. And they (party movers and shakers) still want to take more. The retard is someone that dosesn’t understand that.

Hype up the other left wing stuff that makes sense (some of it does). But don’t come up with “make believe.”

Cry me a fantasia river. They’ve mostly kept military style weapons off the marketplace. Since when has there every been any serious drive to ban the ownership of hunting weapons or handguns for home defense?

Can you please find that in the party platform for me?

Given the fact that John Kerry is an avid hunter (with guns!), I conclude that Bush must be sucking Cheney off in the Oval Office.

This is one of those moments when I thank the Good Lord for short-term memory issues.

Cite was needed for a claim wrt:relative # of so called morons are REpublicans, vs. population at large, vs. Democrats. Still waiting. Or, (and here’s a thought), you could admit you pulled that comment out of your ass, and were just amazed that anyone of voting age (and apparently living on their own in the community) could express and expound on such idiocy and think they were making a valid claim.

Up to you sparky.

Are you serious? Do you think there is a scientific study out there that is entitled “The political affiliation of morons in the U.S.”? Or that there is any way to actually quantify this?

I am not attempting to write a scholarly article and submit it to a peer-reviewed journal. This is a freaking Pit thread. This is not even Great Debates.

So, let me make a Pit-level justification of the statement “there are too many retards in the Republican party”

  • Millions bought Coulter’s books
  • Millions watch FOX News
  • Rush has millions of fans

I cannot fathom, for example, how anyone can watch Fox News, and consider it ‘News’, as well as "Fair and Balanced’. I sincerely judge the intelligence of such people.

Since millions watch FOX News (and buy Coulter’s books, and are Rush fans), I must conclude that there are millions of morons out there, not just the couple of guys mentioned in the Slate article.

[QUOTE=OtakuLoki]
PoleriusSo far, your four cites seem to come down to only one unattributed incident, and Rush Limbaugh, which isn’t what I’d call very convincing.
I don’t know why I even bother, but besides the fact that Rush has tens of millions of fans, here are some more cites that show how Kerry’s French angle is thought of on the Right.

  • From http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1151688/posts
“I would just BET a video of Kerry giving a speech in French would be worth a few voters. Probably why he will hide it.”

“What about speaking French do you suppose qualifies one over another for President? Having spent considerable time in Texas, I can assure speaking French is not a quality that will get you anything but shot.”
  • From http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1161724/posts
“Kerry is a rich SNOB, and his french speaking is just an extension of that.”

“Indeed people really should stop attacking John Frenchie Kerry’s whimpy French view of America and American commoners. After all, John Frenchie Kerry has much more and far worse stuff for which to apologize than just his snotty French fluency and whimpy French attitude.”

"The American People recognize that the French see themselves as rivals to the United States in terms of prestige and power. This annoys the American People, who know full well that the French are a bunch of cheese eating surrender monkeys. It further annoys the American People when we can bail the French out of two World Wars at murderous cost, only to have them sneeringly refer to our policies as simplesme when we want to kill terrorists.

If John F’n Kerry spoke Spanish or Portuguese, the American People would have no problem with that."

“Most Americans are smart enough to know that having anything to do with France is a liability.I just wish our govt would get the messsage.”

Is this not enough cites for you? Do want quotes from every single Republican alive? Should I go through all 47,500 “kerry speaks french” hits on Google?

BTW, browsing the freerepublic threads brought up by Google, I now see where a lot of the right-wing morons hang out (Referring to the NYT as Slimes, to Kerry as “Hanoi John”, etc. Very Limbaugh-esque)

Actually, I think there’s more than a little truth in that. Appealing to hate and ignorance is a very effective way to get votes. Why go around tryng to convince people of a specific platform when you can just appeal to their baser notions?

Well, I’ll try to paint it a purtier color…

Simple, down-home folks with traditional values want a President that reflects those values. To invoke God, Guns, Abortion, and War resonates with them. The Republicans do this, the Democrats can’t seem to. The Republicans are intellectually dishonest in that they pander to these values in order to get the “heartland vote”, since they never really try to enact legislation reflecting these values except for show (i.e. proposing amendments wrt flag-burning, gay marriage, abortion, etc. that they know darn well won’t pass or won’t pass constitutional muster). Throw in an unaffordable tax break that (folks with traditional values) never see much of, but hey! It’s free money, yahooo!

Democrats pander to the ideal that they help people and aren’t warlike and are more focused on the economy, etc. They are not really doing a very good job of it. Also they seem to choose issues with less visceral reaction involved, so again, not as effective.

So in a nutshell, the GOP carefully crafts their message to pander to ret-…um, people with traditional values, while the Democratic Party panders to mor-…um, people altruistic values. Traditional values are simpler and easier to exploit for political purposes than the more complex altruistic ones.

Unfortunately (for the rest of us), for the traditional values folks, Bush is their man, and that won’t change even though his administration at least tacitly supported the abuse of prisoners, even though he will continue to send their sons and daughters (in disproportionate numbers) to their deaths and their jobs overseas.

[paranoid mode]

Oh, so what you’re actually saying when you say that he’s “too French looking” is that he’s too Jewish, right? Is THAT the code? Huh? Because, after all, his grandparents were Jewish, weren’t they? Is that what you’re saying? Fucking antisemites.

[/paranoid mode]

Machetero

You say that like it’s a bad thing.

quoth the OP Polerius:

Well, yes, I’m serious - you asserted via the title and your OP ‘why are there so many morons in the GoP?’ which assumes that there is, in fact, a ‘higher than average/expected’ amount of folks there. I did, you know, give you the alternative possability - that you admit that you pulled that out of yourass and merely focus on “gee, how stupid is it to attack Kerry 'cause he ‘looks French’ or speaks French”. This would be a much more defensible position for you to take. Instead you keep on pounding home that there are folks who hold idiotic positions w/in the GOP (something that not many would dispute, since it’s assumed that in any large group you’ll have some level of fringe elements).

Suggesting that Rush’s listeners all suscribe to all of his positions is not particularly defensible either (some listen for amusement, some listen to get amunition against him, some believe his tripe - he’s an entertainer after all - would you suggest that all Mel Gibson fans suscibe to his ideology? I wouldn’t). Ditto for numbers of books Ann Coulter sold (some were bulk purchases as gifts, some would have been for jokes, some would have been 'cause they’re true believers, some would have to get amunition etc.).

Just 'cause this is the Pit doesn’t mean (as I pointed out before) that you can say anything you want and not expect to get challenged on the veracity of it.

Again I suggest an alternative position “anyone who derides Kerry for idiotic reasons such as that the ‘looks French’ ‘has a rich wife’ or ‘speaks French’ does not appear to have a rational foundation for their position”.

But to continue to assert (as you do here) that we should believe that the party itself has ‘more’ than their share of kooks, based on your bits of anecdotal references is not logical. And makes you look like a kook. Especially when you suggested to someone else that their position wasn’t logical.

I would have thought that the Republican party’s nomination and support for George W. Bush as President of the United States would serve as incontrovertible proof that Republicans == morons.

The same could likely be said of the Dems nominating the likes of Gore and Kerry.

C’mon, people, choosing among this bunch is like saying “If I have to pick a Stooge, it may as well be Moe” . Are these 3 the best we have to choose from?

Can you explain the problem with either Gore or Kerry? Neither are movie stars, but they both have pretty solid records and backgrounds.

Sometimes, I think people just bitch out of habit. Not every politcal party can be headlined by Brad Pitt.

Solid records of what, tyranny?

Tyranny? Tyranny? Lib, you losing your grip? A couple of garden-variety centrist liberals, and you’re painting them with the colors of Caligula and Stalin?

You guys might lose this one, and it will be the best thing that ever happened for you. You can finally shake off the grip of the unholy alliance that the Bushiviks have cobbled together with the Troglodytes. Then at least they can enter into legitimate policy debates with a straight face without worrying about losing the support of some gay-bashing bible-thumpers.

It isn’t the “Right” that is losing. It is a band of deceitful and power-greedy politicos who have no more in common with Barry Goldwater than I have with Brad Pitt.

So quit worrying. If it looks like you’re gonna get sent off to the Jane Fonda Re-Education Center, tell 'em you know me. Get you off the hook. I’ve already checked the “Straight to the Wall” list, you ain’t on it.

On preview: what elucidator said.

At least Stalin had the gumption to stab you in the heart. These modern tyrants eat you like ringworms, from the inside out, nibbling at your liberties bit by bit while feigning a love of freedom. They are grim reaper cheerleaders, basking in your adulation even as they plot to squeeze out of you whatever they can before you die. Your grandchildren will hear of freedom in whispers, from wildmen whom their leaders have declared insane. Apathy is the enemy of diligence.

Sure. Here’s a couple of points on Kerry:

He said he was for the common man. A big vote on employment benefits for a million people died this year by 1 vote: Kerry? Didn’t show up.

http://www.tri-cityherald.com/tch/business/story/5063012p-4990803c.html

He was asked why he didn’t vote for a war appropriation bill that would supposedly get body armor for the troops. He said he supported the bill before he voted against it. (WTF???)

He was asked about having an SUV. He said he did not have one. They pointed to a Suburban, one of the largest SUVs. He said “That’s the family SUV. It belongs to my wife.” Awfully nit-picky. Next, if we find out his wife owns the house, does he claim he’s homeless?

http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0404/141664.html

Makes you wonder about character. But not voting for a man because “He looks French” or speaks the language is just plain dumb. I don’t vote on looks.
