# why are there something called "neocons"

Pretty much the whole staff/membership at PNAC. Plus Cheney and Rumsfeld, regardless of whether they can be considered part of the necon intellectual movement, or have any relevant think-tank credentials.

My understanding of the origin of the neoconservative movement is that they were (putting it simply) social liberals who supported the Vietnam war.

It’s more complicated than that . . . The best way to understand what the neocons are is to contrast them with other kinds of conservatives who criticize them.
