Why aren't things like TiVo illegal?

Of all the weird things they’ve done, the 24 hour limit on DVR’d pay-per-view movies is pretty benign. It’s the same as if you do an iTunes/Amazon/Xbox/PlayStation/CinemaNow/ANYTHING rental.

This may be a nit, but allow me to pick it: I rent movies from Amazon using my TiVo, and the 24-hour limit only applies once I start to watch the movie. Until I start to watch it, I can keep the movie on my Tivo for up to 30 days after purchase. (At least, those have been the terms for every movie I’ve rented so far.) That’s the only method I use for renting movies anymore. I can’t comment on PPV because I use a CableCARD with my TiVo, and PPV isn’t an option.
