So I am reading the [Why can’t socks be easily detected?](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=694374) thread and wondering why it isn’t about sock puppet accounts? And then I realize it’s a pit thread, and I am all like, wtf man? Why is such a benign and non complaining thread in the pit? Rather than threadshit a shit thread (because yes, you can get banned from here for shitting in the cesspool), I decided to start this thread. Then I realized it really isn’t complaining enough. That thread is a simple technical question thread. It doesn’t belong in the thunderdome. But more important, it doesn’t talk about sock puppets. Why people make them, the lengths they go to, why they annoy the living fuck out of some people, and amuse others. Even more lacking, nobody is talking about their famous sock puppet stories. And even worse, I’m complaining about it. ---

The technical term for a second (or third or fourth) account on a board is “sock puppet”, in which one person argues with, or for, his other accounts views. It’s a very old term, and having a puppet or two was the work of the seriously disturbed, or the insanely funny forum junky. Using a different account to avoid the rules, or to sneak back in after a ban, or to mock an enemy (with out suffering the consequences) is a different kettle of stinky fish guts. Then there was the tactic of accusing anyone defending the whipping boy of the moment of being a sock puppet, because it would be impossible for any new member to disagree with the mob. And the more famous battles of the banned, coming back over and over like a zombie horror to attack the mods or forum admin who dared blow their virtual guts out. In a very public manner. Oh the hilarious tales that exist, along with the shadowy hidden battles that only an obsessive admin could tell, but never will. Locked into a fierce battle of wills and server logs, the admin vs the banned, a sad horror movie never destined for the big screen. ---
