# Why can't these plumbing/sewage systems handle toilet paper?

In the Caribbean it’s very common to have a small bin next to the toilet especially in bathrooms at the beach. The fancier beaches have a bathroom attendant who goes into the room before you go in. She (always a she IME) sweeps out any sand, makes sure things are clean, and the bin is empty. I always tip her a dollar or two, even though I’m just going in to pee.

Hotels have “real” sewage systems that allow TP to be flushed.
