Why did I see red triangles? Visual hallucination?

Back in April 25 I experienced exactly the same thing that you have described in excellent detail. It’s only happened to me once. I wanted to ask you a question which may sound ridiculous, did you experience any sort of bad event which happened to you approximately around the time you experienced the phenomena?

No, I didn’t experience any bad event before the triangles appeared. I’d just come from my birthday dinner and all was fine. Did you have an event that you think might be related?

This part, at least, is understandable. Whatever it was was turning point sources into triangles. With anything that isn’t a point source, you get a convolution of the original shape with a triangle. If the actual shape is very small, then it acts almost like a point source. If the actual shape is large enough, then the triangle convolution stops being noticeable, and you just see a slightly-blurred actual shape.

From what you describe, it does sound like the phenomenon is optical, not psychological.

Yes, my son pssed away very soon after I experienced the phenomenon. I know it sounds crazy, but reflectively, my mind interpreted it as a warning or a harbinger of something tragic about to happen. I know it’s probably pure coincidence, but I can’t seem to shake the thought that it was an omen.

I’ll add a data point:

I get these somewhat regularly. Like others, it freaked me out the first time it happened, I checked with my eye doc and she pronounced it a “halo migraine,” occurring in both eyes and not something to worry about.

I have noticed a correlation between taking Aleve and/or Advil and these putting in an appearance.

The last time I was at the eye doc a couple months ago, I was diagnosed with cataracts. Not something I need to take care of right away, but “within the next 5 to 10 years.”

This has been a helpful thread to me.

An update from the OP: I finally got around to seeing my eye doctor, after realizing my prescription needs are changing with age. I asked the optometrist about the red triangles, giving her a good description of the effect. Her response was, “Huh, that’s weird. But it’s not from anything serious with your eyes because that would be visible in the imaging and tests.” She said to watch for any change in the triangles with the new prescription, but overall she found it neither concerning nor as interesting as I thought she might.

All my tests and the images of my eyeballs were totally normal, except for the depth perception. On the little book shaped device where I was supposed to tell them which circles seemed to float on the screen, I saw none. Not in any of the 10 boxes. Seemed to really throw off the assistant giving me the test. The optometrist thought that was odd but said it doesn’t seem to affect my vision so not to worry about it.
