Afternoon delight is no longer one of the worst songs ever. Since the _Anchorman_ scene at least used it to generate some laughs. Many other songs have caused nothing but pain since creation.

Given the fact that my parents claim that Afternoon Delight was playing when I was conceived, no, **I don’t like that song**.

I used to like The Lion Sleeps Tonight, though.

Let’s all take a moment here to envision \*\*elfkin477’s \*\* parents having sex.

Oh yeah. That’s a great song. 😃

Pepper Mill and I were discussing this, and the only movie we know of about a “ghost from a wishing well” is **The Time of Their Lives** , an Abbott and Costello film from 1946. Lou Costello is one of the Revolutionary War Era ghosts. (Eye-catching Marjorie Reynolds is the other one).

This pretty much ruins the image as a romantic one for me.

But nobody in the whole thread, ancient or not, has mentioned that truly revolting song that was popular when I was in high school:

Ohio Express’s **Yummy Yummy**

\*Yummy, yummy, yummy
I got love in my tummy
and I feel like a lovin’ you;

The Love
you’re such a sweet thing

good enough to eat thing
and that’s just a what I’m gonna do.\*

etc., ad nauseum. (And where _is_ that pukey smiley when we need it?)

It’s far more bearable if you hear it in Homer Simpson’s voice. 🙂

MacArthur Park holds no terrors for me, however nonsensical the lyrics. See, I can’t ‘hear’ the lyrics in my head; all I can hear is the instrumental version by Maynard Ferguson’s band. That rocks seriously.

That was part of the bubblegum genre of pop music–it was supposed to be sickeningly sweet. Remember the Archies (“Sugar, Sugar”), and the Cuff Links (“Tracy”), and so on. No sex and drugs from this kind of rock-n-roll, but then, there wasn’t supposed to be.

On the subject of seventies animal death songs, does anybody remember Henry Gross’ “Shannon”? Took me a while before I listened closely to the lyrics, then I finally realized what it was about: the singer’s dead dog. At least Wildfire gets to run away; Shannon just floats out to sea, lifeless. And we danced to this at high school!

That song STILL chokes me up. Yes , I am a soft hearted wussy. Shannon was his Irish Setter, BTW.

What - six months and no one has mentioned that ghastly trucker song “Teddy Bear”?

And I once believed it was:

_You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille,
With four hundred children and a crop in the field…_

I guess no one else heard. Not even the chair.

Regards,
Shodan

> The official worst rock/pop song in the world (according to readers of Dave Barry’s column) is Donna Summer’s “MacArthur Park.” Interestingly, I don’t think I’ve ever heard this song.

Fittingly enough, this song was performed quite seriously on Disco Night by the winner of the last edition of American Idol. If that is not a statement about American Idol, I don’t know what is.

And yes, I was watching it…but only to participate in the SDMB threads, of course…

God, this discussion forced me to fire up the mp3 engine and play the Beach Boys’ version of The Locomotion (the Beach Boys’ version because it’s the best and it has all that cool inside-stuff discussion at the beginning and they were so anti-establishment that James Watt banned them, bless his heart).
