I’ve always wondered where jokes come from (i.e. we almost never know who the originator is). Anyway, for the first time, the other day this “joke” came to me: “Why did the chicken commit suicide? To get to the Other Side” Not sure if it’s funny to others, so it would be interesting to see what Dopers think. [I later thought that the first part should also mention something relevant to a road, like the original. e.g. “Why did the chicken jump in front of a car? To get to the Other Side”, but I’m not sure which one works best] ---

We’ve done this. In fact, we had a whole in-depth discussion about the True Meaning of the original joke. (a search reveals a number of threads about the joke, but I can’t find the one I’m thinking of) ---

My best jokes are spontaneous, and often not what I consider all that funny. My friend was complaining that she has trouble getting started in the morning, so I commiserated by singing “Waking up is hard to do…” She wasn’t too awake at the time, because she replied seriously “Oh, yeah, there’s a song about it, isn’t there?” I told her, no, the song was orginally “Breaking up is hard to do.” She laughed instead of whupping me upside the head, which is what I think was more deserved. Still, the purpose of a joke is to encourage laughter, and who am I to argue? ---
