My apologies for mixing you and Urbanredneck up.
I know you’re perfectly aware of this because you’re one of the thread participants of flogging the theme “OMG she said This Is America in 2019” as exhibit A supporting the OP’s assumptions. But I’ll pretend this is a good faith question for the benefit of any spectators who may be confused.
The thing is, this most certainly is America in 2019. It was true before Smollett decided to stage his hoax. His hoax doesn’t make it false. In the 24 hours since I made that post, it was reported that a white nationalist Trump supporter was plotting to murder Democratic politicians and journalists. . This absolutely is America in 2019 and it is absolutely correct to say that, whatever the context.
That’s why the premise of the OP is wrong. The MSM didn’t “fall for” anything any more that President Trump fell for it by repeating it. A famous person files a police report that he was assaulted? That’s news, you report it. Editorialize that this is the state of America right now? Yes, that is absolutely spot on, because it is the state of America right now. The hoax is revealed? Then you report that it was a hoax. That’s just how reporting works.
It’s interesting that the Brooke Baldwin story cited as proof that the mainstream media being duped and showing their liberal tint was done the day the story broke. It doesn’t say anything about MAGA hats, but it does say that police haven’t yet commented on the case. In short, it’s a developing story about a somewhat recognized celebrity claiming something horrible was done to him, and various people reacting to the story.
As for Brooke Baldwin’s “And this is America, 2019,” is that any different from “Horrifying,” “Shocking,” “On the streets of Chicago!” or any of the other pithy phrases anchors use to transition from one story to another?
In short, it’s all about a news outlet that pretty much repeats the same stories hour after hour throughout the day jumping on something fresh that might wake the viewer up from a post-lunch stupor.
Robert Kraft was arrested for soliciting a prostitute. It’s all over the news.
Yet all the information has come from the police report. Nobody has done independent journalism on it.
So I am expecting that people who are outraged will be outraged by this travesty of news. Imagine! Reporting a story just because the police say so! And I’m sure you will also provide proof that only the MSM are reporting this and absolutely none of the right-wing outlets.
