The way I have read the complaints in this thread, I’m pretty sure if AP published a tweet — “Empire actor claims assault - police investigate hate crime” — we would probably have seen complaints that the AP was peddling fake news.
If you think they’re mistaken, all you have to do is explain why.
I don’t say that I’m “woke” for the same reason I don’t say that I’m not racist – because I don’t really think it’s possible for me to know for sure. I strive to not be racist (or otherwise bigoted), but so much of racism and bigotry is based on unconscious bias that I don’t think it’s possible for someone to be absolutely sure that they’re entirely free of it.
Anytime I see someone declare that they’re not racist, or “woke”, or similar, I suspect that they’re not entirely cognizant of the powerful and insidious nature of these phenomena.

“Virtue-signal” is just a word used by people with no empathy who can’t bring themselves to believe that actual empathy exists in some people.
That’s a definition. Not sure if it’s a valid definition. But who knows anymore in an era where words have such malleable meaning. It’s as if it is Humpty Dumpty land.
I find it hilarious that “virtue signaling” is effectively entirely connected with people on the left wanting to make themselves look more liberal, but is never applied to those on the right who display attitudes that make themselves look more conservative for the same basic reason. I suppose it might be because conservatives don’t see the kind of behavior those people signal as particularly virtuous even though it shows how they conform to conservative belief, while they personally find the liberal’s attitude virtuous, just insincere and unrealistic. “Tribe signaling” is probably better used for what both sides do, but denigrating “virtue signaling” as a solely liberal phenomenon really shows one’s blindness how the same sort of thing happens on the other side…

Here’s an example: Jumping into a thread to explain why the MSM fell for a hoax without ever showing that the MSM fell for a hoax. Sort of conservative tribe-signalling, showing contempt for the MSM for ill-defined reasons or for things you assume without evidence that they did.
Judging from some of the early responses that cheered the observation and yet also could not offer any support for it, I say the signal got through.
Who is this “they” of whom you speak? The MSM? You think USA Today, the WP, the NYT, etc. all met and said, “Let’s get him on Good Morning America. Who wants to make that phone call? Great! Thanks, Bob. Make sure you remind them we’re all co-conspirators in the MSM bid to take over the world!”

Does HuffPo, Slate, Salon, AV Club, or Root count as MSM? Maybe not. I guess you could call them infotainment blogs. But they sure AF fell for it hook line and sinker. And anyone in the comments section who dared to express doubt was instantly labelled a racist homophobe.

I guess everyone forgot about the 2010 incident when a white woman claimed a Black woman through acid in her face. MSM was all over the story. During the investigation, cops got suspicious, and the woman, Bethany Storro admitted she’d thrown drain cleaner in her own face to get sympathy.
So a white woman alleged a Black woman threw acid on her, and it was all over the MSM. Tell me again how the only reason the supposedly-liberal MSM ran with the Smollett story was because it involved a Black victim, a white alleged assailant, and a MAGA hat.
