Why did they make the Desert Eagle .50 cal?

One thing for sure, owning a .50 cal makes just as much sense as owning any gun, as long as the owner is responsible.

Mangeorge, while the second amendment guarantees all Americans the right to bear arms, nowhere in the Constitution will you see the words “all firearms are created equal”. Some guns are better than others and it makes more sense to own the better ones.

I’ll surely disagree with that. And I’m not a gun owner.
I paid 40k for my car, because I like it. According to your claim, it would have made more sense for me to buy a 15k used ford.
My point is that it isn’t up to one person to decide what makes sense for another. If one want’s something bigger, that makes more noise, then more power to (probably) him.

Not necessarily. If a $40,000 car is three times as good as a $15,000 car then it’s giving you more value for the money. Cars can perform many different functions; status symbols, commuter vehicles, family transportation, off road entertainment, hauling heavy equipment, etc. A vehicle which might be great for one purpose might be terrible for another.

Guns are the same way. A gun suited for hunting is entirely different from a gun used for target shooting. A weapon used by the police is different from a weapon used by the military. Even a weapon used for personal defense on the street may be different than a weapon used for personal defense in the home. But so far, nobody’s come up with a use that a Desert Eagle performs as well as other weapons which cost less.

Little Nemo, you state that “status symbol” is a legitimate purpose for a car so why doesn’t the same apply to guns like the Desert Eagle? I personally don’t think the D.E. is a practical choice for me but it’s no worse than all the damn Hummers taking up the road and parking spaces in Scottsdale. Fact is I’ve never been inconvenienced by someone else using a D.E. pistol.

Whether something “makes sense” is a very personal decision. And remember, I said “responsible” gun owner. If the family’s going hungry, and you pay $1,000 for a gun, then you might be open for outside scrutiny and comment, and probably not responsible. Same for an expensive car.
No Hummers for me. I think they’re silly. But…

Hoo-boy, mangeorge, you wouldn’t want to hang out with the guys I shoot with. One drives a Hummer and shoots a $8K Perazzi, one drives a Suburban and shoots a $12K Kreighoff, the other drives a Yukon and shoots a $16K Silver Seitz. All shotguns no less.

So, you’re telling me the Hummer dude would do something evil to me because I think his True Love is silly? Even though I’ve defended his ownership of an outrageously expensive gun?
Subs and Yukons are not Hummers. H2’s are not Hummers imo.

No misunderstandings, mangeorge. I just laughed when you pointed out expensive firearms and SUVs, and thought about both on lavish display at my gun club.

BTW, it is a real Hummer ($100K +), complete with auto-inflate tires, etc. The guy owns an excavating company. The Yukons and 'Burbans look like toys next to it.

Can anyone tell me what the handgun was that Charles Bronson’s character used in Death Wish III? It’s been years since I saw it, but I thought it was supposed to be 50 cal and semiautomatic, and this was before the Desert Eagle. I tried Googling, but couldn’t find a definitive cite.

IIRC, it was a .44 Automag, the same one used by Clint Eastwood in Sudden Impact.

If I’m remembering the right gun I think it was a work of fiction. It looked like an automag, but they threw in some technobabble and basically said “it’s not an automag, it’s better.”

The pistol you are thinking of from the Charles Bronson movie was real. It was a Wildey.

Hey, cool site scumpup. I think the chambering in the movie was .44.

How about that? Guess I should have checked.

BTW: Just caught a repeat of DW3 on cable last night. Gawd that was a bad movie!

I have, it’s not that big a deal, but it doesn’t do much for your accuracy.

As far as these novelty pistols, one wonders at what point a 12 ga. with deer slugs (some of which are made which hollowpoints), isn’t a much better option. For home defense type applications its hard to beat a 12 ga. pump action loaded with 00 buckshot. IMHO, of course.

Favorite pistol still is a well made 1911 .45 ACP.

LOL!! I watched it too, Lumpy. That was just an excuse for high body count and spectacular splatterings. Couldn’t you see the perennial smirk on Chuck’s face, as in you chumps actually paid money to see this?!?

Lots of confusion on this one. Most of this was answered or corrected but the core question I did not see addressed. The desert eagle was developed in colaboration between IMI and MR. The weapon was developed as a superior innovative side arm, the caliber .50 AE was developed with a specfic mission in mind. IMI wanted a caliber that could penetrait an engine block reliably in a package that could be relatively comfortably carried as a side arm. Spefically they were looking for a weapon that they could arm thier border check point personel with that had the potential to stop a vehicle bearing down on the check point filled with explosives and a determined motivated driver. While other manufactures have since created more powerful cartriges, the desert eagle 50 ae remains the only semiauto pistol cartridge capable of delivering 300 + grains at 1500 fs.

Zombies have guns now. We’re officially doomed.
