The Dope was mentioned in a discussion on Word Origins , I clicked the link, or maybe googled it, and was captured by the Dope.
I originally stumbled upon the Uselessknowlegde.com site…a trivia related board. I used that site to hone my trivia skills for a shot at the big money on Who Wants to be a Millionaire in 2000. Uselessknowledge.com closed, but before it went away some of the other posters pointed to the SDMB.
Similar format, Q&A, but with an all-seeing overlord.
I don’t post much…only when I find that no one else has covered the same response.
I do enjoy following the collective flow.
I have been reading the website for a good long time…then I decided to look into the forums.
The only other forum I’ve ever talked in is a football one, but this one looked interesting because I can talk about more than just football.
Plus to quote Issac Jaffe: If you’re dumb, surround yourself with smart people (this one is me), if you’re smart, surround yourself with smart people who disagree with you (everyone else)"
Let’s see, back in high school (I think 10th grade), I was taking a C++ class and the teacher was very laxed about computer use. I would browse the Internet during his lectures, and one day I stumbled upon some of Cecil’s columns. They were very interesting, and I’m pretty sure I read virtually every single one in the archives.
Anyways, after the school year ended, I found myself surfing the Dope at home. There, I had more time to really explore the site and eventually signed up on the message boards (hence my join date was in June, the month school was out).
I barely posted on the boards then, and to be honest, I’ve only started posting regularly in the past two months or so (I’m quite bored at work, so this is when I do the majority of my Doping). My “posts per day” is 0.20 according to the statistics page, but I hope to raise it substantially! I really wish I hadn’t lost my Charter Member status (can I get that back?), but oh well, I’ll gladly pay nearly $15 / year to be a part of this.
