Why do dogs react with insane joy to snow?

The Dachshunds seem to like it. For a little while, at least.

wonderful description

I had an Aussie about a million years ago that went bonkers for it. He would jump into a fresh patch, then leap backwards and look at the new tracks he made. In deep snow, he would run through it with his mouth open, letting it shovel in. He also liked to chase snowballs or try to catch them. Goofy, wonderful mutt, he was.

You know, I almost mentioned the breed of my snow-hating dogs. One was a beagle. The other was half German shepherd /half beagle. Maybe beagles really don’t dig snow.

IMHO and all that, but as others have indicated, it varies. I’ve noticed that big dogs tend to like it while small dogs tend to dislike it. My two Chihuahuas absolutely hate the cold and snow, while some labs, a keeshond and chows I had in the past loved the stuff.

I had a dog when I lived in Denver about 25 years ago (part Chow and part golden retriever, very thick-coated dog) that went bonkers for the snow. She would run around in the yard and shovel it into her mouth, then she would lie down and let the snow completely cover her up until she was just a big mound covered in white stuff.

Disclaimer: She had a covered porch she could lie on if she chose, and we always brought her back inside after about 20 minutes. And as I mentioned previously, she had a thick double coat of fur that kept her very well-insulated.

Now, unfortunately, I live in Tucson, where it maybe snows about once every even or eight years.

I think this is true, our Shih Tzu is not a fan of it.

My brain just broke.

Every dog I ever had was pretty ambivalent towards snow. Our current dog, a six-year-old yellow Lab, will play a little in the snow, but doesn’t go nuts.

Seems to me another example of how some animals, definitely dogs, have distinct personalities. It’s not just humans anthropomorphizing them.

One first dog, beagle/basset hound was somewhat excited by snow at first though not greatly. One current dog, ‘pit bull’, exact breed(s) unknown, more strongly dislikes winter and the cold and doesn’t seem perked up at all by snow. She’d rather wade into the snow to take a dump rather than somewhere that’s been shoveled though, for whatever reason. Not that the breeds necessarily matter. It’s probably like a lot of things where dogs differ much more from one individual to the next than between breeds in general.

It’s not just dogs. I watched a bunch of sea otters at the aquarium turn ecstatic when they got a pile of powdered ice (snow being hard to come by in LA). They literally flipped out on it, squirming and sliding.

This doggie seems quite fond of snow, a bit better organised than most dogs I would say,

My beagle loved snow when he was young. A lot of winters it was higher than he was tall, and he’d jump in it and go plowing through it.
